KES-5 Kenwood External/Mobile Speaker

Weighs 1.75-lbs”

Yeah. Lemme tell ya something: with bracket attached, it’s half the weight of a six-pack.

I’ve read reviews from all over and not seen anything but praise. Few pieces of gear get “universal” approval.

It may matter what radio is driving this speaker, but one can’t help but be impressed by rough-use government service accolades where intelligibility is crucial, and exterior conditions are difficult.

I’ve an armload of typical external speakers from CB retailers (Cobra and Uniden) with which I’ve been satisfied, but they’re all going to new homes.

Prior to the use of DSP-equipped mobile speakers, I’ve wanted a solid back-up radio rig — every component — for five (5) family locations; vehicle & house. This speaker atop that list. Found a nice deal on a lot of five (5) out of Houston.

Did a search here which didn’t show a specific thread about this speaker. Some comments scattered around. Thought I’d get one going to ask:

Where’d you mount this heavy so-and-so?

I did find this to make an easy adapter to a CB/Export.

Cerrxian 3.5mm Mono Male to Two-Pin Screw ($7.00)

1). Solid black wire = Ground
2). White stripe wire = “Audio”

Audio leads (light-gauge, non-shielded) look to be three-feet (3’).

A 70V 8-ohm to 4-ohm transformer (I don’t expect to have to use; but that would drive my total to a whopping $27/speaker).

The radios I’m looking to use this with are 2.5-3.0W 10% THD with an 8-ohm load. I’m guessing (hoping) it won’t take 1W to drive this in a mobile. The Kenwoods appear to be 4W/10% at 4-ohms.

Found a copy of the instruction sheet to add info I missed in first post:

40W, maximum input power
20W, rated input power

(Dimensions are 5x5x3)

Doesn’t look hard to add an 18W KEMO MO33N amp (if desired).

And, a less expensive RS transformer

Maybe I’d be creating a helluva noise problem, but what’s a loudspeaker without being LOUD?

Save the battery on a wireless mic until needed? Looks like one could do this (power off remotely) on a UNIDEN Bearcat 906 wireless microphone (while still in range).

Etc

(The pair above at $30).

I’d imagine the speaker as used in public service vehicles is asked to be heard at some distance away. I haven’t looked at those radios to see what wattage being used for amplification.

Maybe someone here knows this speaker in that use.

(Yeah, I thought it’d been about a month since I was home now I see the dates above).

The five orphans are lined up and staring at me. Decided on keeping four (4) of them. Sons and my vehicle plus our homes. Set to hang at a window being run by an amp that one can hear them however far they can project. Or run them “quiet” enclosed by house or car.

I see these as adjunct to the WM DSP Speaker.

I’m looking forward to those tests, but it’ll be “maybe” by Election Day on that.

Okay, next trip it out it got hooked up with an adaptor.

Unquestionably higher quality audio than a typical “external speaker” from truck stop or CB shop.

FWIW, I can max out MIC GAIN and TALKBACK with a Uniden 980 (RK56) where mic and speaker are almost on top of each other.

Concern about it being 4-ohm into a nominal 8-ohm radio seems moot. Even driving it at a low Volume setting it’s easy to hear (at rest).

This speaker a must-have for any mobile system. Primary, or backup.

A recommendation I make based on being able to find clean, used examples.

1) Where new is $50–$60, I’d go ahead and move up to the non-DSP WM RADIO ClearSpeaker at $80.

2). Best CB aftermarket is up to about $50. Generally $30 or so. That’s where one of these at $15 or so (used) is a helluva bargain.

Cool. I used something like this.

Adaptor shown
Cerrixian (Amazon).
Sold as pair.

1/16” Phillips screwdriver to install

I've eyeballed that specific speaker in the past myself but wasn't sure how the 4 ohm impedance would play with the export/cb 8 ohm. Seems like you had the same idea but went forward with it. That specific speaker is also sold under the Macom Kes-5, same speaker, same specs with different name but a lesser cost. I might jump on the band wagon with you on this one if sounds as good as you say it does.

My current truck speaker sounds, but doesn't sound very good... (off to the right of the radio)20201207_093605.jpg

As above, I bought a lot of (5) used (appear new). Approx $12/ea after shipping.

You will find it a substantial upgrade from the OEM speaker in console. That thing’s the very-near equivalent of the radios built-in speaker. Thus audio quality goes way up.

Has a VERY long cord (relative to what’s needed in a big truck), so mounting it in the drivers side overhead bin is E-Z. (HD VELCRO and zip ties around bin cords).

With that length can use MIX 61 1/2” ID ferrites to get multiple wraps at each end.

I like using 1/4” ID split-loom. Taped at each end. Makes tangles unlikely and provides protection. Make some S-hooks from a wire shirt hanger to drape the speaker cord from the console at headliner edge leading over to the bin.

As a backup speaker that’s highly weather resistant it’d be hard to go wrong with the KES 5. If for some reason I wanted to hear the radio while outside the truck this is the one to have as I could hang it from closed window or door (with a rain shield or not).

I’d never dare let the CLEARSPEECH speaker sit out in the sun, wind, or rain. You’ll find reviews where the off-road crowd hoses down the interior and a KES-5 is in the vehicle.

It’d be nice to know how one does with an outboard DSP filter as compared to a CLEARSPEECH. The audio quality of the latter has an edge, but is it enough to overcome the desire to have a “tough” speaker?

Keeping the external filter at the radio location for ease of control (with the speaker “remote”) might be that answer.

I wouldn't worry about the 4 ohm impedance of this speaker when being used with a CB or export radio. Many of these radios that use a 5-pin TO-220 package audio power amp IC, are using a TDA2003 or a Chinese clone of it. The TDA2003 datasheet recommends a load between 2 and 4 ohms. With a 4 ohm speaker, distortion is quoted at 0.15% up to 4.5W with a 14.4v supply voltage. Above 4.5W the distortion rises steeply due to the output voltage swing being limited by the supply voltage. The datasheet doesn't show a chart for an 8 ohm speaker, but I would assume similar distortion figures, only with the output power being less, around 2.25W or 2.5W, where the steep rise in distortion occurs.
I know Cobra, Ranger/RCI/Galaxy/Connex, Stryker, Anytone, and probably many other radios use this IC. I'm not sure if Uniden is using them or not, but it would seem likely.
I might have to get one of these speakers to try out. Sounds promising.

Quick note as to audio quality:

Tested seven (7) microphones from the U-980 radio with this speaker.

What wasn’t obvious with lower quality external speakers was definitively different in noticing the mic changes with the KES-5.
