It was discontinued in 2015, and with how good they worked, I highly doubt you will find one for sale. If you ever do, I highly recommend it. Here's a look under the hood of this one. Unfortunately, I traded this one to a friend for his Uniden Washington (i do like that washington though). I got this one back temporarily to see why it quit working (fuse blown, otherwise fine, he must have hooked it up with reverse polarity lol). I always liked how neat this board looks. They even silk screened the names for the variable resistors onto the board
My first sideband radio was a midland 79-892. I made a lot of contacts with it and it basically opened up CB to me. No FM, but a good radio.
Minimal but worked great. I sold my original that I bought new, and ended up buying another one. Nice looking kinda metal looking case instead of black, PLL02A, and came in a C.W. McCall marked box.
I like the look of the 8001XT, never saw one before.

I never owed a Midland but always hear people saying good things about them. I took about 20 years off from CB before getting back into it again. I probably missed a lot of good radios. I just come back in the house after cutting down a apple tree and set down and turned on my GE Super Base and found DX Hammering in on my Dipole antenna and it went as fast as it came. That's how my luck runs. LOL
Midland radios used to be good but nowadays they are just a name and no substance.
Yeah it sort of looks like CB interest is dieing in general but ham will probably go on for a while. When enough of us old timer fade away so will CB. But I could be wrong ! Some companies only want to invest in fast moving products.
Cb is going to die sooner if they don't get supplies up to meet the demand. We haven't been able to get jack for the last year and it isn't get any better.
As most of the name brands we are/were familiar with have been bought out by foreign concerns, and quality has somewhat declined it is sad. But it's not just radio, it's with most of products we use. We've kinda been sold out by greed and monopolies.
On a side note, I did talk to John at Galaxy Friday I believe it was, he told me they had received a bunch of radios so dealers should have them. I think he also said the 979 line had been dropped. I know there is a lot of mixed feelings on Galaxy, but for the most part they are good AM talkers, and SSB when they get warmed up. Another plus for me at least, is that I have always been able to get hold of Galaxy support, and have had out of warranty radios that John has walked me through issues to get resolve. I personally have not been disappointed by Galaxy at all.
I also like the look of the big meters.

There are some good radios out there. President and Anytone both sell some decent radios. For a full-featured export radio, I like both the Anytone AT-6666 and the President Lincoln II+. The latter a bit more than the former, but the Anytone is a great rig too.
I also have a Galaxy DX86V that I like a lot, but not as a mobile and probably not for a new operator. It is old school simple, AM and SSB only, and requires some tweaking both in initial setup and while operating. But I have old school HF rigs that are like that too.

That's a shame they dropped the 979. I have 2 of them both with the 347 6 digit frequency counters plugged in the back of them and like them a lot. I'm in N/E PA were it get's cold and they don't drift that bad. Maybe on a cold winter morning you might have to play with the clarifier to keep it adjusted a little but no one ever complained about the way I sounded. Your right quality has went down hill some-what in everything.
When it gets down to the bottom line we can thank the big unions demanding too much and mismanagement of funds by upper level management. ( American Greed )

There is very little development in the 11-meter market as the market share is just not there to support it. All there is now is rehashed exports and the used market. It is a shame because back in the day there were some fantastic radios made for 11 meters, Stoner, CPI, Tram, Browning, and early Cobra.
Get an Anytone-6666, 11m conversion is two buttons on the front and it's a great radio out of the box. Do not have anyone "tune" it for you. Just buy one new and get on the air. It's a 10m export and has AM/FM and the SSB that you most definitely want. I have two of them and both put out about 75 watts PEP on SSB according to my meter. My Stryker 955 (which really looks like the same amp section as the Q6) only puts out 10 more watts and actually has less features than the Q6. Both are good, but for around $250 you can't go wrong with the Anytone.
