Look what I found inside a 148...

Omg, lol... I couldn't believe what I saw when I popped the covers off this old school 148 gtl.

I'll let you guys/gals guess what it is.

Hint, the srf/SWR/cal control has been removed from the front, taped off and laid inside the radio. for the control for what's in the cigarette pack,

Hey they put it in a box, that's one step up from the basic crayon eating hack.
Good point is , it ain't got no bugs in it.

If I saw that and there was no note from the guy who installed it, it's straight to the parts bin.

By the time you trace the wires, figure out what's all changed, find replacement pots that fit the knobs, recap it, etc, it's not worth it. Parts shipping and labor exceed the radio's value.

Thats one reason I don't open a repair shop, I lost interest in fixing those kinds of problems. I'd be happy doing alignments, recaps and chasing bad silicon here and there, but when people with discount bin electrical tape get inside them, I'm out.

If anyone does this to their radios, please be kind to the next guy and leave a post-it detailing the mods inside.

First why would you remove the pot from the outside and put it inside? Why put what ever you made into a cardboard box? I know some idiots like to let the smoke out but this is a pun gone too far!

Yes, it's an echo board in the cig pack. Never seen anything like this before in these radios, lol...but at least it wasn't going to short out.

I'm just curious as to why they didn't just put an L tap on it and mount it to the chassis.

You would think the radio would be hacked up after seeing that in the radio, but nothing else has been done to it.
All limiters still intact.
Clarifier still stock.
No variable key.
No power tweaks.
No swing mod.
No volted finals.
All IFT cores complete (not cracked).
All they did to this radio was removed the SWR/Cal/SRF control and taped it up and laid it in the radio. Then they mounted the echo control in its spot. That's it that's been done to it.

Owner told me "YANK THAT S#!+ outta there", lol...

So that's the mod that Al at Sparky's used to make that the YouTube video where he adjusts a knob on the front of a radio and a flame goes up and down on the board. That video is pretty old now. I think it was to only YouTube video Al ever made.
