Do you live in an Urban, Rural or Backwoods area??

The Ham Store in Wheaton.
Doesn't ring a bell. Must not have done mail order. Universal Radio was close to an hour away, but they closed down. They got a lot of my $$$. R&l Electronics near Cincinnati is a 2.5 hour drive. They are still going strong. They have great prices and usually ship quickly. I encourage anyone to visit them. Place is jam packed with all kinds of crap. Gotta dig and root around sometimes. Owner is a cool dude.

Of course, DX Engineering is the Mecca. If they don't have what you want, you don't need it. It's the same drive time of 2.5 hours. AES sold out TO HRO and closed their Ohio locations. I miss them. It was a great place.

R&L is 25-30 mi from me. Cool place. They're prices are competitive with the big dogs, well stocked. Their shipping is quick and reasonably priced. I buy from them whenever I can. Earlier this year the gentleman that ran it, the son of the founders, passed away. Don't know if this will effect the store's future or not.

Oh, sorry to hear that. I got a few things from there this summer. Hope they can keep it going.

I felt the same in every town I've ever lived in. My current Village is way different than most. As long as you don't break any significant laws, they just look the other way. Our local police never hassle you over petty stuff. Motorcycles, 4-wheelers, golf carts and UTV's run the streets. We have no zoning or crazy ordinances. However, the town I live in is pretty rough and drugs are rampant along with theft. Gotta keep yo stuff locked up. I have 17 cameras outside.
Good friends with our Sheriff (worked for his dad when he was the Chief of Police in the 80's) & my neighbor across the street is a State Trooper & a Deputy two homes down the street. Crime rate is pretty low. Being a Retired Law Enforcement Officer (30 Years) the criminals leave me alone pretty much.

Yeah they were local only, I don't think they even had a website. There was also Spectronics and Ericson

My city only has 3000 people in it. That said we are the county seat of the largest county in my State and while not the State Caoital we are actual the oldest county the first County in the State. I live 100m from the County Court House, Fire Department, Police, Ambulance and Cities Adminstration building. 400m from the cities High School, Middle School, and 2 of it's 4 elementary schools. While we have huge amount of land compared to population I am surrounded very large cities. My home is the second oldest in the area and prior to my purchase 10 years ago had been owned by the same family since the 1700's. So I am in a mix that urban and rural. I am less than 20 miles in some directions of huge mega cities, 45 from miles of the state capital in one direction but mostly mostly nothing but small villiages of 1000 or less for hundreds of miles in another direction. I live in quite a unique spot in my state.

Used to live in a smallish suburban city.

Now live in the middle of farms and ag. Called the zoning director before we bought the place, asked about antenna towers and he said as long as yours doesn't get into FAA territory or fall on a neighboring house, they don't care what I put up.

I can easily get a 200 footer in the air before I have to worry about it, but still want to buy the land to either side of me. Farmer knows this and told be I could run dipoles to his silos if I wanted.

I put my electronics repair shingle out here after we moved in. Most of the shops nearby are gone, and I'm not looking to get rich at it either - just fix things when and where I can for the area truckers/neighbors.
