Brand new Stryker 955hpc+, Was operating awesome. Pushing max pep of 25 into kl-503HD, and suddenly last night the swr warning came on and shut down radio. SWR is now off the charts. Confirmed radio and not antenna via dummy load. My swr protection was set at 4.5. I thought these new fangled things were immune to blowing stuff up??

I think pumping 25 watts into the KL-503HD is a bit much. Believe the amp still is a 1 mosfet driving 8. At any rate it probably zapped your Stryker.

The Stryker alone being a 100 watt radio, that is more than plenty to just have the radio operate happily by itself and let mother nature do her thing. :)

Actually these "new fangled things" are all mosfet finals. Mosfets do not like high SWR and will blow easily, I would set that SWR protection at 1.8-2.0. As far as your amplifier, they make two versions.

Either way a Stryker 955 is a pretty hot radio for that amplifier. Were you on AM or SSB when this happened? In theory if you have the HD version of that amp 25 watts PEP should work. Did the amp blow as well? If it did I suppose the amp went first and then the radio.

UPDATE: Whew, took radio out to car and hooked up. Radio IS fine. Perfect swr out there. So, I must have water in my roof antenna coupling. I also have a choke up
There, my guess is water got in and is messing stuff up. Problem is it’s 34 degrees and 2 story house. So it will a day or before I can get up there and remove choke. Oh. Also determined my dummy
Load is SHOT. Just glad radio is ok

Thanks for the replies and input

Glad your radio is ok. :)

But as 9C1Driver suggested, set the SWR alert from 1.8 to 2.0. But from the get go, the amp being a 1x8, I still think that is just too hot even at 25 watts. Sometimes the SSB Audio is compromised. There is an article here on how to disable that first mosfet, then you would be ok to feed that 25 watts PEP on SSB into the amp. (Don't do the mod if you are not comfortable clipping/desoldering stuff.)
