Did you make any contacts with this setup?

I tried a lot, but not with that radio. I got two of these radios from MFJ and both had problems. I did make contacts with the antenna, though.

What is pattern? (roughly) and mast can be metal? Lightning arrested to ground?

The mast could be metal as the center hub is non-conductive. There is no lighting arrestor - that is the responsibility of the user.
