Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Thanks for the encouragement. Yeah Brandon is all star in his support, above and beyond. Tech5 etc. So is anyone else that helps. As a beginner I like hearing any response! Great bunch of knowledgeable helpful people on this forum. Thanks, how could we bin a ts440s! I think I'm stuck in the...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Got the volume back!!! I think it was a dodgy connector on the IF board got bumped while moving it around...crisis diverted!

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Should of taken your advice, if its working leave it alone!! (mantra for rest of my life now...) Replaced IC3, didnt realise IF top board had a broken hinge screws and it slid forward while testing - its metal chassis screw contacting the outside shell of electrolytic C59 on front control board...

    399 JJ - Mods-for-Upd858-Chassis

After comparing the PDF to my HTML copy I realized the HTML version is better formatted and slightly more complete (not cut off on end of pages). You have to unzip to a directory and then open the local HTML page "HOME _ 858ssb.htm"

    399 JJ - Mods-for-Upd858-Chassis

Thanks, I managed to save his website using the internet archive past snapshots but this PDF is more convenient. The legacy of unit 399 will live on forever and we will always remember him for his work on the 858 chassis.

    Trip Down Memory Lane

Only seen a mod a few months ago a mod the HTX100 I think to convert CW to LSB. Didnt look that hard either. Remember reading years ago they were like a HR2510 but had a better filter on SSB as per AudioShocks pic. They were known for the LCD display slowly bleeding black with time from the...

    Galaxy radios is dead

Honestly, I think 27mhz CB will outlast all of us.

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Your the main reason I did stick with it, you gave me enough mentoring, motivation and insight to go for it. I can never thank you enough. Its RX does have some weird noise introduced < 500khz but everywhere else sounds fine.I have the IC on its way so I'll chuck it in. I still gotta work on...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Hey Brandon and anyone else watching this thread :) Thought I'd give an update. I took a break a month ago after feeling a bit flat with it. But I decided to trace all PLL board cmos IC voltages to get a feel if it was financially viable as you were saying and I decided to keep working on it...

Looks like Hotel Zulu is in Australia so he my find it too expensive to post overseas. Pity he edited the post out.

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Agreed, 100%. Definitely was a step in the right direction. I would not be surprised and I think that's a great theory because when I first got this radio it had a lot of surface rust and the bottom stand was removed and it looked like it had been bolted under a shelf (top cover had extra...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Turns out I did not hear it at all on supposed frequency and what I could hear was actual bleed though my laptop speakers nearby. Sorry for the bum steer. Putting headphones on for the ts440s receive today, I found its doing similar to before, in that a 27.405 LSB transmission is actually...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Unfortunately I think I spoke too soon. Today I've been testing with second radio. The second radio was really hard to hear - very low in static/signal on the ts440 regardless of RF Gain position or if I had a screwdriver in antenna socket. At the same time it was blowing the doors off my...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Well Brandon , I think its working!!! Looks like that may been the RX problem. I will verify tomorrow with a second radio and report back. I just installed the new PLL into IC1 (mn6147c from aliexpress) and the 3khz sweep thingy is gone on startup and it has proper volume and no weird noises...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Thanks, Just trying to scrounge up the resistors to try that with what I have on hand. Today I ordered the replacement chip (mn6147c) so in a weeks time I'll put that in.
