I have had some that actually drive the radio harder and have a very hollow sound when bad. Best test I have found is like you said put it on a mic. But listen to yourself on a monitor radio. Best to use a non amplified stand and a Hi-Z tube radio for test.
Nope. The control on the bottom just limits the control on the top. You open the control on top all the way. Then you set the control on bottom until you hit your goal. Then thats the max the mic will do with top control all the way up. This way you do not over modulate.
