Yeah but I do recall the static went up when we removed it, so we ended up making new ones, (I'm fairly certain they were longer) out of R/S aluminum ground wire.
Might be a good thing to know, what size it needs to be (with downward radials) to create a path for static to ground.

I run a modded 4' Wilson Silverload (like the one that died on you?) on a 4 magnet mount with a ground wire over to the AM/FM antenna mount.
I removed the original black shrink wrap and all the wire except for enough to go around the shaft about 3-4 times on it's way from the base to the top...
I know this thread is over a year old but I was wondering how well it worked out, and if you ever got around to adding a downward radial system made from just wire, maybe with alligator clips to the antenna base (and a brick or ground stake for each lower end?) to give you quick assembly once...
Yep it's a radio shack 1/4 wave. I still have the base to mine I bought in 1974. We discovered that we got gain if we bent the radials down at about 60 degrees like a Starduster, but had to either lengthen or shorten the hairpin, I can't recall which. Seems it went out to about a foot long but...
