    Need some expert advice

Thanks wavrider, will try to find a way to get higher. Will also consider a vertical dipole, but is the radiation pattern the same? I would think so, being the GP antennas radials are providing the mirror image of the missing half, right? And Doc, the color of my socks? Lol And 959, can't...

The pic is of the newer radial base. I took this while I was making it. It is made of 14 gauge solid copper formed into a 4" diameter circle. I used 22 gauge solid copper, wrapped and twisted to make the tags, and connected the radials to the tags. The radials are 16 gauge stranded, 108" each...

    Need some expert advice

Good morning all, I hope that everyone had a good Thanksgiving. Now, in light of the overwhelming knowledge base and expertise located in this forum, I was hoping to find answers and possibly help in deciding which antenna to build for best performance in my application I live in a flat, urban...

Can I use a center loaded antenna whip with a lil will magnet base?

The little wil is a compromise antenna. It's not the best, but it works, and sometimes works good. I have had two of them. Mount it in the middle of the roof and tune for best swr. My first one had a 1.6:1 swr on channels 1 and 40 and was flat in the middle of the band. I made a lot of contacts...

Awesome info for ground planes and counterpoises

I learned alot by studying N6LF's experiments. Hope you find this helpful

    Explain the counterpoise/ground...

Here you go. Long read, but very, very useful. It explains alot about ground planes and counterpoises in real world experiments.

    Need some help

Captain, I wish I had some good test equipment like you have described, but i have to make do with what I have and try to fill in the blanks with the RF theory that I know (thank you internet and US Navy) DB, I know that a 1.3:1 seems like a tight tolerance before cutting back power, but the...

    Need some help

359, I can see it on the radio's signal strength meter. With the little wil, silverload, and firestik, anything above a 1.3:1 swr and the radio will not dead key the full meter. It will modulate it if the swr isn't too bad, but not dead key. The higher the mismatch, the less the meter will show...

    Need some help

I agree with you Captain, you will never be able to do as good of a job without the gear as with it, and that is why I went for cleanest heard audio over strongest signal (playing it safe knowing I couldn't be that accurate going off of just audio) but that is not at all what MOGVZ was accusing...

    Need some help

And just so everyone else who happens to read this thread knows, yes, I agree that it is best to have the right test equipment to check your work when adjusting a radio, but it can and is done without an oscope/spectrum analyzer/ or frequency counter etc... on many occasions if you know what you...

    Need some help

Man, you just don't know when to quit do you. If you honestly think you can tell if a radio is over modulating without having seen, tested, or heard it, you are a fool. You do realize that you are saying that everyone who HAS seen/heard/tested my radio is wrong and that you, who HAS NOT...

    Need some help

Ok, MOGVZ, I didnt want to light into you, but you are begging for it. So let me get this right, you are saying that you know for a fact that my little radio is overmodulating, even though you've never seen/heard/ or tested it, and in spite of 2 cb shops that I've had tested it, yes 2 (I didn't...

    Need some help

And Robb, I was pleasantly surprised by how good these short antennas tuned. I mean, as far as I know, an 18' run of good coax at 27Mhz is almost like plugging the antenna into the back of the radio (1 wavelength through copper) but I could be wrong. And with the ladder rack, I didn't know if it...
