Well this post is about a decade late but I thought I would share my solution to the popping sound when keying and unkeying. It reduced the volume to such a low level I consider it a very acceptable solution.
I tried many of the posted solutions but most addressed the symptom instead of root...
Well the uPD1156 was not the issue. that's the bad news. The good news is C88 a tantalum capacitor was the culprit. tested ok but clearly it had issues. the bacon sizzling noise (even when volume off) vanished when i replaced it with same value electrolytic! that problem solved.
i realigned...
Would be great if UNIT_399 or another SSB 858 guru could comment.
Another update...
I am now getting static and other noise coming from the speaker. same noise on internal and external speaker. Happens with volume up or completely off. volume knob does not influence this noise nor does the...
Checked all three caps. within spec. so i played with increasing the capacitance of C44(AM+SSB) and C43(SSB Only but added to C44). All that did was appear to increase the recovery time. Makes sense. So i put those back to stock. AGC recovery time was fine with 4.7uF and 10uF, respectively.
C42...

The Signal strength meter will not go below 1 s-unit on SSB mode (AM is S0) when the radio is connected to a dummy load.
I have not attempted to...
Reviving this thread since it is fairly on topic...
Hoping there is someone out there that can assist. I have a TRC-457 that is having what i believe to be an AGC issue. I see in this thread a fix was developed with C63. However, the CC 40D is a very different radio.
When i receive very strong...
Well it appears the SSB balance was out of whack, which was odd because i had aligned that when i completed the recapping. dont know why it needed to be realigned again. perhaps it was inadvertently moved.
anyway. all good now. :)
Hoping someone smarter than I, can assist with diagnosing this high pitched tone i get when TX on SSB. Does not happen on AM.
Symptom: When TX on SSB, a high pitched squeal like tone is heard on the RX of other operators.
Troubleshooting:
changed mic and same thing. keyed up radio with no...
