cobra 139xlr receive issues

I have a 139xlr that I just bought at a garage sale and everything seems to work just fine except the receive. I have a connex 3300hp hooked up and it receives very well and they are in the same room and the antenna's are 18' apart. Is there a way to boost the rf signal like in a newer radio or...
