Those 505s are an audio monster aren't they and all it takes is turn the 2 variables inside all the way up oneis for AMC the other is for POWER and go with it.
I have a 505 that peaks 30 watts no joke .
Because the 505 has a differant chassis in it that has a MOSFET transistor for itsfinal output and the 505 has 2 pots in it, one for AMC and the other for POWER.
All u gotta do is turn both of those all the way up will really transform the radio into an audio monster peaking out around 30 watts...
I have to agree with you sir on what I'm seeing and I'm just applying common sense with past expieriance with experimenting with many differant antennas for 30+ years so my final decision about the gr-45 is just marketing hype selling crap that just looks cool because it's differant.
I had no issues from switching both driver and final to a 2sc1306 and a 2sc1307 and the 1307 has near identical specs as well, they worked fine in my cobra 29 without any additional butchering
If all those steps are necessary just to switch from one bipolar to another similar but not identical bipolar transistors in final output that's a little more radio butchering than it does to accomindate a MOSFET conversion.
I'm gonna need to study more on this mod I can't decide how I feel...
He's absolutely right these uniden 980s are a waste of time really so hand that 980 to your kids and buy yourself a quality radio like a president McKinley or if 10 meter is your thing can't go wrong with Anytone 10 meter radios line the quad 6 ECT lots of power good sound all around tops .
I recently traded for a 980 and it looks and works like new except it does not transmit due to a blown final that I already pulled and checked with multimeter and it's shorted so I'm assuming this is a MOSFET transistor with no writing or marking on it just smooth darkness.

I have several of these 7 ft skipshooter whips and the one in currently useing I had to cut off the tunable part of the top coil plus a little bit of the oil itself until I was left with a 6 inch loading coil on top for my swr to be 1.1 from 1 to 40.
After I did this the skipshooter has...
Mics wire up to this radio just fine as long as one knows to only use 3 wires on any after market mic no matter what kind or brand or power mic or not they all work.
Modulation, Keysup, Ground, that's it.
