A good ballmount for my 108" whip

Hey can anyone recommend a good ballmount for my whip . I would LOVE to get the breedlove but, to side mount it's going to be bout 100 bux and I would like to do it well BUT, MAYBE not THAT WELL !

I have read that some cheapies will not tighten enough to side mount . I'm not wanting a cheapie but, a GOOD ONE .

Any suggestions ?
 

You've ruled out the easiest answer, but I can certainly understand why. I think I would start looking for the oldest ball-mount I could find. If it's heavy, ugly, looks like it's 40 years old and came off of 'Andy's police car, it might be what you're looking for. Can't remember the brand, GE maybe?

To buy a new Hustler SS ball mount, yer halfway to what the Breedlove is and half the quality too ;-).

The Hustler has a crush sleeve in the middle of the assembly that was a hair too long for the two halves to seat properly.

The really simple fix, just take a Dremel or a belt sander to the bushing sleeve and shave about 1/16" off, then they seat very well.

I can shake my whole Jeep by grabbing my Hustler ball mount.

For just a 102" whip and spring, the Hustler is plenty solid enough.

I just wish I'd known about the Breedlove as I could put anything else I wanted on it...where the Hustler would be a bit flimsy for something like a tank whip etc. Though I may just weld on one of those tank/Hummer whip mounts to the Jeep at some point anyway.

I read the reviews for the R/S ball mount and NOBODY recommends it after buying one !

I was wondering about that HUSTLER ....I'd love to get the Breedlove it appears to be the CADILLAC of ball mounts !!

The Hustler fits my budget a lot better though !

DOC !! I'd love to find one of the oldies !!! I wouldn't even know where to start to find one though !
 
I love my breedlove with its twin pins to keep it from rotating then the quick disconnect fold down piece. The workmanship is hard to beat.
Pay for what you get in quality

For a side mount application , what all would I need for the Breedlove ? Maybe I'm wrong ; but, it looks to me that I'll need to get the ball and the big metal mounting plates . That FOLD DOWN feature is very nice . If I could do the breedlove for about $ 50 .....I'd be all over it !

Maybe , I need to give them a call ....
 
For just a 102" whip the mount only would be a option. Jerry can provide some options if you give him a call.

I started out with only a 102" whip on mine, then switched gears. This picture does not have the quick foldown feature but it is now just below the egg beater so it can fold or come off.

Is there any way to determine if a Ball mount is indeed a G E Master ball mount ? Is it stamped on it or anything ? I did a great amount of thinking ...and I think I have figured out where i Might find one or two .
 
GE Master Ball Mount

They have not been made in a long time and most are either in use, but u do not here much about them or they are in basements.

The big difference is they are not just a few teeth going into the bottom section that connects to the roof. These (Huster, Antenna Specialists, Motorola and Wilson) made them like this and they are not strong and may come apart. If you tighten it too much to the body frame then they will break and the antenna will flop over. They just are not super durable for antennas over 2 pounds. Best place is the roof of the vehicle but you have to be careful because insurance may not cover you and it increases the chance of someone else getting hurt by a flying antenna.

The Hustler Mount is a few bucks, but they are made from stainless steel and I have used a few....never broke one yet. The Spring is made from Stainless as well, and will not rust like the radio shack models do after being out in the weather and road salt.
Install requires a few small holes (lol)

if he has a 108 inch whip he wont need a spring to tune on the cb band . the ball mount will actually get him up to 110-111 inches
