if it starts changing freqs then there is one of the 2 pins touching grd, there are 2 pins that change the freq. they should have nothing to them unless you allowed for a pushbutton arrangement for changing freq.....i dont have the pin out here but you can look at the schem. and tell which 2 not to have hooked up. sorry not much help but am away from shop. 73s midnight special

1 = Audio
2 = Ground / Common
3 = Transmit
4 = Channel Up
5 = Channel Down
It uses pin 4 and pin 5 to go up and down, so something in the mic plug is shorting one of these pins to ground.
I am puzzled that you say when you plug it in wired or not....if all of the pins are open on the mic connector, it should not do anything.
That is weird.

Just get a mic plug adapter from Copper or off ebay......All the HR radio's and their clones use the same pinout for the mic wiring. For less then $6 I think it is you can get a adapter to allow 4 pin cobra mic to work in that unit or 5 pin Radio Shack din style to work with no soldering iron needed.

If you already have the 5 pin mic connector and and a soldering iron go for it but keep in mind they come numbered the connectors and the wires are color coded. If you have something shorting those pins then the connector is bad internally because Helen Keller could spot a jumper wire shorting those pins out if it was external.
