uniden 980 ssb

I have heard a lot of people are really disappointed in this new rig as it only does stock watts even after a peak and tune.. Sounds like Uniden is going back to the 23 ch low power days of the 1970s pre 40 channel rigs!!!

the 980ssb is a great radio for what it is,, its dead on freq on sideband and gets out just fine for a low power radio, it sounds great with the stock mic, it looks good, its small, if more power is needed just hook it to an amp, the low output will work great with most amps. i was talking skip on friday on my lunch break with it and 2 different contacts remarked on how good it sounded and dead on freq.

i would luv to see a channel mod come out, if it does , great, if not it is still a good radio especially when most people are getting them for less than $150 shipped

I want to get one of these myself, so I can experiment with it. I know the beep mod has been done, but I want to get the full clarifier unlock done, as well as modifying it for an IRF520 final instead of using that junk RD16HHF1 final they use in those radios now. I still suspect that there's a way to mod it for channels, but it may have to be modded like some of the Realistic TRC-485 radios, where you had to (carefully) lift up a couple of the processor pins to open up the bands. Dunno if anyone carries them locally, tho. Have to look into this.

~Cheers~
