I have been subscribed to the channel for a while, I get a kick out of watching some of the stuff he dismantles for science, reminds me of when I was a kid.
Had to tear everything apart to see how it works.

At its lowest voltage setting, it will easily avalanche a BJT. Pulsed TDR using a 2N3904. The one I built has a rise time is faster than my 200MHz scope can see.
