If you are going to use this amp solely for CB you would be better off selling that amp and getting one similar (pair of 3-500's) specifically built as a CB amp. It would be much more efficient. That is if it is done properly.
Hey there Capt. If you have your SWR meter after the radio and before the amp, IOW the swr meter between the radio and amp, when the amp is off and you read the SWR you are reading the SWR of the antenna, just as if the amp was not in line. As soon as you turn the amp on and you check your swr...
No argument there. However you can't change the laws of physics. Even checking that each band is performing to a standard, that standard due to losses would never compare to a mono band designed amp. Most multiband amps fall off pretty badly at higher frequencies but still acceptable.
By all means bring it home, they make super amps when they are upgraded with modern upgraded stuff. If you are not a hammie type have the thing CB "worked over" properly and it will be a powerhouse.
Does any CBer care about tube parameters? Do any of them box builders have grid current meters on them? Nope! But as anyone knows (if you know triode tubes) the only limiting factor on a triode is grid current. Those parameters you show are what a tube can take under full load conditions 24/7...
All ham amps commercially built are better than any CB amps commercially built especially tube amps. The problem is ham amps are usually spread out across 1.8-30 mhz and not one particular band is optimized, therefore a ham amp used on the CB band certainly would not be optimized. The key is...
Call them whatever you want. The fact remains they let the sweep tubes die in ham amps. Minimum of a single 3-500 these days. The 811 tube is the new sweep tube.
The hammies let the sweep tube amps die years ago. Them guys know what's going on. Why do the CB guys still insist on dealing with sweep tube garbage. Minimum tube these days is a 3-500. Step out of the 20th century and get into the 21st.
Best bet is to get a basket case SB-220 cheap. Long as the transformers are good send it out for a CB "work up" buy a pro. As BBI shows they do 2KW plus when done right.
Can anyone explain what D14 and D15 are doing in this circuit?
I took a look at the schematic and I see these diodes. Kind of unusual to see them there and I can only guess what the designer had in mind with them. I am thinking that "maybe" his thought was if one of the tubes arced the back...
Nowhere in any spec sheet by ANY company who makes a 4CX5000 tube do they show that tube being used in grounded grid. It is NOT an option. You are on a fools mission. Go to a real triode meant for GG use. Don't waste your time any more
Speaking of Corvettes, if you want to score a high score in a Bloomington Gold event you will need an original battery. It is probably hard to find a good original battery for a 1950's Corvette. One trick was to take the old battery which will no longer hold a charge and cut a large section of...
What is the specs on your new meters? FS current and internal resistance? You should be able to change the original resistors on the board and add one perhaps and you won't have to go nuts. What are those values on the new meters?
