Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Brandon I think your doing too much for me! - I really appreciate your help but also I don't you to waste too much of your time based on my lack of knowledge. I enjoy having a go at this stuff but yesterday I had a new feeling come over me along the lines of......."would it kill me to sell a...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Glad you corrected me. I was still looking at the PLL VCO's. I know the one your talking about on rf board. Thats the one I found d49 shorted and replaced and done a bit of work on it from the sonybond glue. I will look at that today and report back :)

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Thanks for mentoring me Brandon. I was wondering what VCO was on vs frequency. I can now do the calculation based on your example. Rechecked the BPF diodes again (ok). I actually tested every other frequency range today instead of just 14,000mhz and its working great, its matched the service...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

I recapped the PLL Board with no change to the problem. VCO 3 & 4 still voltage drifting on test points (start low and rise slowly) with same 3khz audio sweep. Decided to go check out VCO 1 on the RF Board (I had replaced a few components that had legs eaten off previously) as I read below on...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Re: Friture I downloaded it today, it can run on windows as well. I have to experiment with it. Started the PLL board recap today, just did one of the VCO's, there was countless halo/dry/cracked solder joints under its rf shield on solder side. This ts440s is worse on solder joints then my...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

I'm not sure what your using there to create that but its amazing! I haven't had much of a chance to look at it today other then briefly monitoring VCO 3 and VCO 4 TP voltages when first turned on doing the above 3khz sweep thingy and both TP start low at 3v and very slowly rise up to 4 to...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

The AI's are in infancy aren't they, in some ways impressive what they can do already, but still still missing the mark in other aspects. I do have more volume in manual wide but I think it may be something else then that Murata SSB filter. Tech 5 I will do that check shortly - thanks that...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Thanks Brandon, I did read your other longer post before you changed it. Its not rambling to me because I've never heard about that with DC and crystal filters as a beginner its all new knowledge to me. I enjoy your guys talking about this stuff or even disproving each other theories based on...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

I never used chatgpt but now you said it i had a go - works really well. Disregard that black daughter board comment in my video, just reading AM RX goes through that as well so its ok and I have re soldered that in, like you said SSB final filter is through this: Can I use a ceramic non...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Thanks guys, the amount of time wasted chasing a red herring with L40 around wrong way.... TP11 is now at 4.7v and I just adjusted to 5.0v no problems......RX volume does not get dragged down when TP11 now probed....lesson learnt for me on this even though the previous owner must of had it out...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

I guess I'm missing the point in my above post, DMM is probably OK given inductor wrong way around but I will do the full test once L40 swapped tomorrow morning.

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

You guys are right! L40 is the wrong way around! Heres my VCO 5 followed by a pic of a VCO 5 from the net with what I assume is the correct orientation...I've never had it out so I didn't even think about that aspect.. My VCO 5 (L40 the wrong way around - I'm aware grey coax is unplugged in...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Thanks for the support as always. Brandon: R147 (tested OK) has 4.3v on its left leg as per pic (R146 has 4.7v both sides) Its mounted vertically so I cant prob the TP11 trace side without soldering on a fly lead?: Tech 5 and Brandon: And results of ohms test from D14 cathode to R146...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Well I just soldered a wire directly from TP11 to R146 as per your pic. Put it back in and now 4.7v on each side of R146, still 7.8v on TP11. Same trace and different voltage on each end - its messing with my head.

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Been looking at it again today, 4.68v on each end of R146 while still showing 7.8v still on TP11. Just trying to work through everything you said to me from your previous posts. I also removed C180 (10uf 50v electro) and it tested at 4.7uf so I just put in what I had on hand, a 10uf 25v until...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Nodens - Thanks for heads up on D13. I did retest it before putting back in my reconstructed efforts. 1.8v forward in one direction only using my DMM diode test mode, ie passes the diode test. Dr. Frankenstein - Thanks for the heads up on extra detail. I was having a look at that as I could...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Thanks for your help as always Brandon. I've spent hours since you posted that message and not much luck unfortunately. Q34 tested out of circuit (OK). Q35 tested in circuit while Q34 out (OK). Inspected Q34,Q35, TP11 traces think I found really small bridge (half diameter of hair) on Q35...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

I just rechecked, definitely getting 4.8v on the collector of Q35 (2sc2459 middle pin) as per the diagram. Tomorrow I'll get a chance to test Q34 out of circuit. Forgot to mention, I think your right re: D13, it has a high forward voltage (~1.9) when I tested it out of circuit (OK) while...

Thanks Brandon for that post - awesome detail for me trying to learn this stuff - appreciate it as always!. I put my measurements in blue back on the diagram below:
