    Now this is odd!!!

I had went through all my finals/drivers the other day with my tester (TC1) three times each. All these transistors showed as good transistors with good HFe. The NOS Mitsubishi 1969's I had checked and showed as 40 to 75, now show as 0 to 2 HFe. The NOS 2312's showed over 50, now show 0 to 2...

    142 low transmit

He fell asleep with the key locked down. I've already spoken with him about doing this again. He now understands the damage it causes, not just to the radio but on the airwaves also. And, I look at it this way, He's never done me any wrong, never caused me any trouble, always offers to pay me...

    Galaxy Saturn low transmit

Got another Galaxy Saturn on the desk today. Someone stamped the sale date on the inside heat shield. Sell date was July of 1996. Issue: Low transmit power. Evaluation: Tested finals, driver, pre-driver, af regulator, Passthrough regulator, solder joints. All check out good, except for the...

    142 low transmit

I see on the datasheet for both, 2166 Minimum - 35 Typical - 70 Maximum - 180 1969 Minimum - 10 Typical - 50 Maximum - 180 So, the driver being at 29 is past the minimum point and the final at 28 is way below the typical point, veering on the minimum point. Got a used 2166 at 67 HFe and a...

    142 low transmit

I'll check that, thank you. I did check voltage from power supply, it's showing 14v. Lights or nothing dims when keyed up. Radio receives great. I'll check that regulator though...

    142 low transmit

Got an old Cobra 142 GTL on the desk today. Issue: Low transmit in all modes. This radio belongs to a local that I talk to on a daily basis. He talked on this radio for about 6 months after he got it back from me. I just recapped it and aligned it. It was doing around 18w in all modes and AM...

    Var. RMS?

I will say this about it: He praises this guy down south, as many other people do. He paid over 1200 bucks to have those two controls, HiFi, recorder and noise toys added. Funniest thing about it all is the fact that my work on these 30 to 50 year old radios that people are giving up on is...

    Var. RMS?

Yes it is a Stryker, 497 I believe. This guy that owns the radio works on tube amps, very good at it too. He sends all his radios off down south of NC to that well known radio guy. He specifically stated one is for adjustable peak and the other for adjustable rms. He already has an adjustable...

    Var. RMS?

Got a question... There's a local around here that speaks often about his radio having two separate controls mounted on the back of his radio. He states one is to vary is RMS, while the other varies his Peak. He had it done by a well known radio guy down south of me (very well known in the...

    Cobra 148GTL xmit freq issue

Yep, it was my frequency counter. Hooked one of my other freq counters up, realigned radio, dead on the money now. I guess running 400w through it blew out the front end, even though it's hooked in through a 30db sampler.

    Cobra 148GTL xmit freq issue

Thanks Brandon and TM for popping in. Yes, the coarse and fine tune controls were centered. The oscillators (34-35 mhz) align perfectly. The 7.8 mhz aligns perfectly. VCO adjusts perfectly. Buffers adjust perfectly. Something must be wrong with my external frequency counter. The external...

    Cobra 148GTL xmit freq issue

Got a Cobra 148GTL on the desk today. Owner just wanted a checkup. No channel mods No clarifier mods Limiter(s) intact No swing mods Only mod is a variable key on the back of the chassis (they removed the AM power VR and wired an external potentiometer in its place). Wax still in VCO, xmit...

    Cherokee CBS-1000

Got a Cherokee CBS-1000 on the desk tonight. Looks like it went through a metal shredder, lol... Cover is all mangled up and marked up. Evaluation: Carrier level too high (6w carrier). Limiter removed. Audio IC getting hot. Off frequency. Audio sensitivity down (receive and transmit). Power...

    Another 55v no xmit

Touched up ALL solder joints on the entire board. Still hasn't done it since Sunday morning. Anyway, finished it up. Works great, just like new. The owner is on his way to get it and I informed him of the gremlin. He said he would get back with me immediately if it does it again. Thank you guys..

    Another 55v no xmit

Couldn't get it to reproduce the issue. Pryed on parts using my ceramic tuning driver, pushed around on all the IFT cans, shut it off for several hours and tried several times. Just can't get it to do it again. Guarantee it will do it again immediately upon the owner trying it out. Hey, I have...

    Another 55v no xmit

This one radio is gonna be the death of me. Hooked it back up, turned it back on to finish up with alignment, immediately wouldn't key up. It would make the sound of keying up momentarily but would still be receiving while ptt was pressed. Picked radio up, shook it a few times, still no key up...

    Another 55v no xmit

Update: Replaced driver and final (2166/1969), got full output back. Swings around 25w PEP (without tuning) and RF power seems to function properly. Only keyed it a few times briefly to check for RF power function and modulation. Want to go back over my work again and check voltages and check...
