It was the first one that came to mind since I've owned so many of them. I never had a side band drift on my 2950.
Still running the dx959b on Lower 38. With the modification. Still no drift. I'll keep you posted.
This Thread is all about the Galaxy DX series of radios. I am a ssb operator. I wanted to figure out if we could lessen or stop the side band drift.
There is a lot of good information shared by others on this thread. The ranger 2950 does not drift on sideband. I compared the ranger circuit to...
I tried the light bulb oven. I believe it was 6.8 volts on a 12-volt wheat bulb that I got the desired temperature which was around 110 degrees.
The only real difference between the two circuits, Ranger 2950 versus Galaxy 959 is the 5p cap across the Crystal posts.
Ranger must have known...
Interesting word, stabilize.
Throwing it out is really not an option. We're talkin CB radio, not amateur. We are also talking about an entire line of radios, the DX series.
I have found that after I completely solve the heat issue, the circuit is just about stable. Now I have put the 5p...
Before you do anything with these you need to solve the heat issue. That can easily be done. Then you have to move on to the stabilization of the circuit itself. I am hoping that 5 p.m. capacitor I put across the crystal solves the problem. So far, so good.
Yep, I agree. But I just discovered that on the Ranger 2950 it has a factory instatted 5p cap across the pins of the Crystal in the final oscillator and then I remembered an old tech had told me when I was a kid that he was doing it to stabilize the circuit. Anyone ever hear of this?
Interesting discovery. I pulled the two parts out of the parts radio, 2950 Ranger. They do not even use the SVC201 that the schematics indicate. There is a glass diode in it's place. I cannot read the numbers. I am going to take it by the jewelry shop tomorrow and have them use their magnifying...
Same circuit, different capacitor in the 2950 versus the dx959. And different diode. I have a junk 2950 that I will take the parts out of.
What radio is that from Andy?
Agree, misspoke but going the try one. Will keep you posted. It's pretty much the only component in there that's different so to speak. Going to give it a shot on my 959 and see if it solves the problem.
Gentleman, I believe I have found the cause and the Cure for the Galaxy radio drift.
I will use the clarifier on the ranger 2950 versus the Galaxy dx2547 for instruction purposes. The Galaxy's all use a zener diode in its clarifier section that is an SVC 251. It has a rollback voltage of minimum...
As you should. The mod simply allows you to turn the power supply up to 13.8. It comes from the factory maxed out at 13.6. It allowed me to turn the power supply Up. 2. How is that in any way harmful to the radio or the power supply.
