Noise toys are for people who realize that after spending all that money on a big radio they have absolutely nothing worthwhile to say. However they feel a need to justify the expense, hence the addition of noise toys.
Never, and I mean NEVER will I understand the mentality of people who...
Up here in north-west Arizona it's hanging on. There are a number of base stations that keep the fire burning but it does ebb and flow. The good news is that with so few stations OTA it is possible to get really good range.
Since we are very close to I-40 and several large truck stops there...
The Warrior was insane, that's for sure. Still, I wouldn't mind having one in my collection.
They are a very rare bird indeed. I've heard that fewer that 100 were produced, but since D&A is long gone and they never kept any records anyhow, who knows for sure.
I know that I've never seen one...
The D201 /201A was designed to use a non-amplified mic. The proper mic for the Tram is a D-104 on a G stand (un-amplified).
They will work with a T-UG stand (amplified) but you will need to keep the gain down to near zero.
For maximum SSB enjoyment consider a 10-DA head on the G stand.
OK, no problem. You probably already know this but don't try to run it at 500w, it won't sound good and you will go through the tubes very quickly. With around a 5w input, it should do around 350w all day long. I've found that if you have good air circulation around it, the K500 doesn't need...
Damn, Jesse! Had I known you were in the market for a K-500 I would have sold you mine for around $250 - and thrown in enough extra tubes so that you would never have to buy them again.
Mines not quite as pretty, but it's a solid workhorse.
No problem J9. I don't receive any compensation from Alan, just wanted to let you know about him. He does do good work although it may take him a while - it took 6 months to rebuild my Phantom, but I basically sent him a basket case. No worries though, he will get it done and it will be done...
They came like that. It's pretty much as the seller advertised... Only the top dealers got them.
I've seen one of them in person, long, long ago. This one -and I have to assume it's the same radio- pops up on ebay from time to time.
Maybe someone with more money than sense will pick it...
Nice little find and yes, the Firebird (and it's derivative, the Kicker) are one of the better sweep tube CB amps out there. I have one on the shelf as a backup in case my Phantom ever craps out.
800 watts? Not on a bet. If you hit it hard enough you can get 500 out of it but you will burn...
You are learning, young Padowan. No way in hell would that thing take 100w input. Try it and watch things go 'boom'
From looking at the photos I'd guess that the output would be closer to the 350 -500 w range, if the tubes are strong and it was well built.
Homebrew stuff is always a...
Correction: I wrote that the Varmints used 8950s. This was incorrect. According to Alan: all Varmint amplifiers used 6KV6 drivers and 6LR6 outputs. The XL 450 had one driver and three outputs.
The XL 600 was probably the best of the bunch.
Apologies for the error and any resulting...
Sweep tube amps (so-called because they use a tube originally designed for the horizontal flyback or 'sweep' in early color TV sets) were very popular back when you could still buy them for 2 or 3$ each in any drugstore - and who could forget Radio Shacks 'Lifetime Tube Warranty'?
Most of...
Okay, I'll admit I've never seen one of these... but seriously? $495.00?

There's no sensation quite like plate modulation!
It's more than a tag line, it's an absolute. People spend incredible amounts of money on processing equipment for solid state rigs attempting to approximate the sound that can only come from a tube. It's more than just loud. Anyone can do...
Tube-type radios generate a lot of heat and heat kills components. Add in the age of the units and you often wind up with dried-out capacitors and resistors. Often the internal wiring will need to be replaced as will the external power cord.
Parts can be hard to source and some tubes are...
Old tube radios? Gotta love 'em. Just understand that they are that - old- and have probably suffered at the hands of countless golden screwdrivers. Even if you find one that is near-new it's still likely to need some work, most likely in the power supply section.
Having said that, here are...
