Can a newbie tune his own radio

Many years ago, among other duties, I worked behind the parts counter at a local TV & Appliance store. Often I would be presented with a question similar to this one by someone purchasing parts for a repair at home. Being as careful as one can be, I would often respond with "If you have to ask...

    Connex cx_33tlm3

One of the most useful radios I ever owned was a Pearce Simpson in-dash AM/FM CB. Read that again, I didn't say it was the best; I said it was the most useful with regard to functionality. If you are one of the thousands that slip seat on a daily basis, you will know what I'm talking about...

Need help with oscilliscope hook-ups for cb

Finally finished my sampler construction this past weekend, based mine on the example you provided only without the ferrite coil, cause none of the 3 Rat Shacks in our area could accomidate. Unfortunately Rat Shack is all that's left...but that's another story. Works just fine for the freq...

Sparky CB Shack turning into Jerk...

If your opinion is indeed factual, why did you feel the need to start this thread? I would think if you perceive a problem that needs corrected, you would address the issue at the source. I spoke with Sparky one week ago today and while I could tell that he was busy from what was occuring in...

    info on the TR-696FD-1 ???

One arrived on my door stoop today. It's missing the outer sleeve on the box. Couple that with the previous comment of someone receiving two radios each with different versions of final and I'd be inclined to state they are rebuilds...but what the heck for $89 + S/H, if it works. Now my...

Need help with oscilliscope hook-ups for cb

Look at the diagram above again. You would view the modulation from a sample of the radio's RF output, while keying the radio. As stated by others previously, you should not attempt to measure the output without tempering the signal by means of a RF sampler.

Need help with oscilliscope hook-ups for cb

I too have been looking into this. From what little I know on this topic, I believe a RF Sampler would be the best approach. I hope to build one once it thaws again in the garage. This example comes from a HyGain svc manual and I've been told it too should work for a scope in addition to the...

    SWR Warning Light

I've found it best to connect the radio to a 50 ohm dummy load with obviously the speaker cover off. While keying the radio, adjust VR6 clockwise to establish the threshold you desire for the SWR warning lamp. I suppose this could also be performed on the proven (confirmed with meters) low SWR...

    New Connex.Seen it yet?

I know a good many freight haulers utilizing Mp3 players now and none of them have or feel a need to fumble around with anything. Their play list is built at home on the desktop and they are good to go. When you get right down to it, it wouldn't need be any more distracting than inserting a CD...

    GI Joes Electronics ??

I've purchased two different export radios from them in the past. Both came promptly and as I requested; unmodified. Two of my coworkers have GI heavy swing modified radios and I believe them to be less than clean sounding, but that's opinion. I also inquired about a third export radio from them...

    SWR Warning Light

VR6 is used to adjust the threshold for the warning lamp. If the swr is ok, it may be as simple as tweaking this a smidgeon.

battery booster for powering mobile base setup ?

Just gave the wife back her 400 cranking / 900 peak amps battery pack. She did me a favor by asking for it back. I had been using it in the garage to power radios. We have had several of these over the years and none has lasted for more than 2 years with regular use. I've got a new fleabay...

    New Connex.Seen it yet?

While this radio may not be for you, I suspect there are a good many freight haulers slipseating on a daily basis that would have interest in a version of this concept. Perhaps the next generation of this design, if it ever comes to that; could explore adding a quality AM/FM tuner similar to...

    5 1/2' Francis issues?

For over ten years I've sworn by the 5.5' Francis coupled thru a good 18' coax in my work rig. But in the last 6 months I've experienced a new one of these having epoxy failure at the ferrule and it's replacment showing a poor swr in spite of replacing every other component in the line trying to...
