    11 meter is very quiet?

I'll bring my 20W PEP and see what happens :)

My scrap wire inverted V sweep

My inverted V sharing some real estate with my homemade GMRS antenna. I've got the span a little wide on the vna but not bad for an old extension cord huh? In hindsight, I think that ugly choke should be at a right angle to the mast but it's a working.

    TRC-458, good receive, no transmit

We're on the air fellas! Multiturns installed, adjusted L30 per manual, haven't touched any other adjustments. AM deadkey 4 watts swings around 12. SSB peaks around 20. That final bias is still real sensitive. I bet VR16 is only dialed in a few ohms to set bias at 15mA. I still think I have a...

    11 meter is very quiet?

Conditions have been horrible in Lonedell, Missouri about 30 miles west of St Louis. I had the barefoot Gemtronics GTX-77 fired up last night blasting all 12 watts into my scrap wire inverted V at 25 feet and made one contact with 305 in the Buckeye. Yep, I logged it.

Well well. Shorted VR16 and measured 46.8mV at TR43 base, keyed up, AM. Gonna buy some pot s.

    TRC-458, good receive, no transmit

Kind of wanted to put multiturns in here anyway. Having a hard time finding 300 ohm. Would 200 ohm work? As a test and assuming the rest of the circuit is ok, I should be able to short the two utilized terminals of VR16 and see very little if any voltage at TR43 base?

I'm sorry my friend. That should read. 57v. Edit in progress...

    TRC-458, good receive, no transmit

They look the same, just isolated and checked. .57 Vf on both and that varies with temperature change. By the way, I got rid of the lingering collector voltage by replacing the relay on a whim. Keyed was showing around 6.5v but when i unkeyed it would spike to over 16v and slowly bleed off. No...

    TRC-458, good receive, no transmit

Just to clarify, I used rosin core electronics solder, decent stuff just can't remember the name. No plumber products touched this board. I just know a solder sucker can create splatters and I want to make sure none got mixed in to the old flux while it was bubbling. I've already found a couple...

    TRC-458, good receive, no transmit

One ohm as measured in your schematic and thanks so much for taking time to make those. Here's another thing I noticed after rechecking driver bias. When I adjust VR15 for the driver bias as described using USB I can pretty much nail 40mA right on the money. However when I switch to AM and...

    TRC-458, good receive, no transmit

I hate to ask but is it possible you have cw and ccw reversed in the image? Regardless, full clockwise is .607V, full ccw is .732V with a very linear adjustment through full travel so something is still amiss. This is with mic keyed and no audio input. Not sure if this is a clue but with the...

    TRC-458, good receive, no transmit

I've got TR43 unsoldered, awaiting a replacement. It tested fine on diode check but I know that doesn't neccesarily mean it's good. VR16 tests fine also. With TR43 out of the circuit, is there anything I can check before installing new final? Also, I only eyeballed that L30 slug. If that was far...

    Looking for mobile antenna recommendations

I drill the roof and use NMO mounts as I like Larsen antennas. The NMO27 is pretty decent at about 4 feet tall. My current setup uses a Larsen 30mhz coil with their 64 inch whip cut down to about 62 inches. Works quite well on my barefoot McKinley.

    TRC-458, good receive, no transmit

I experimented a lot with electronics as a kid after getting my first Science Fair 60 in 1 kit. Got real interested in digital stuff and started breadboarding logic gates and sound synthesizers (man I miss my SN76477s) but RF circuits made my brain hurt at the time, kinda skipped over it. Then I...

    TRC-458, good receive, no transmit

Gotcha. I was wondering if the final I installed from the other radio is actually bad. A simple diode test across the junctions showed good but I imagine there could still be an issue with it. I don't think I transferred too much heat soldering it. I'll poke around a little and probably pull...

    TRC-458, good receive, no transmit

Vr16 does change it, midway was about 150mA, all the way down was around 100mA. I'll reflow the wiper terminal. Vr16 checked good, going from wiper to unused terminal and taking it through full travel shows almost zero to 290 ohms and pretty smooth for watching on digital mm. I'll certainly...

    TRC-458, good receive, no transmit

Yes sir. Every component I've checked has been isolated even if it meant removal. I'm quick with this iron and solder sucker though. I just finished checking c172, d66/d67, c169 just because they're in the vicinity. All good. Man we're on page 3 with this thing I'm probably wearing you guys out.

    TRC-458, good receive, no transmit

Ok I rechecked my work, all looks good. Voltages look good. Driver bias still good at 40mA. I'm using a different meter as the first one was showing an unadjustable .28mA at TP2 in the milliamp range but when I switched to 10 amp range and moved the lead to the correct jack on the meter, it read...

    TRC-458, good receive, no transmit

All check good. I had my leads connected wrong at TP2 by the way, I'm only getting 0.28mA at key up. VR16 still makes no change and I did retest it. I'm done for the evening. I'll recheck my solder work and check some voltages tomorrow to make sure I didn't create a problem. Sure appreciate the...
