ultimately its about S units, theres very little difference between a 200w deadkey and a 1200w deadkey. math says one thing and the meter says another. these people should recognize the difference but they dont
i've tried explaining this very thing to someone and it never quite "clicked" in their head. its great if you can get 1.3 on ch40 and 1.1 on ch1 on the first try, but should you actively go out of your way to get such a reading?
not really
bonus points: they measure swr between the radio and...
for reference about the fmd455 mod, heres a schematic
note the signal deviating into 455KHz in the big yellow circle. this is the most critical aspect of the mod on a cobra 148 gtl / cobra 2000 gtl. the same logic can supposedly be applied to any radio which lacks fm
anyway not trying to...
anyway, some people see the maco brand and think "thats cheap". no idea where that perception comes from in all honesty, if you have a maco you arent competing with anyone. i mean this very, very literally
the smokin gun ii IS a good antenna, dont get me wrong here. technically the maco isnt...
maco y-quad, easily. mines not even that high off the ground yet it really doesnt need to be, to be completely honest.
as an added bonus, you can easily get dual polarization out of the maco by simply using the same cophased wire typically found in semi trucks (the one used for dual antennas)...
apologies about oversimplifying this, but its two solder connections. i would personally rate it as a 7.5/10 on a 148 gtl / 2000 gtl since you need a frequency counter, minimum.
the IF amp that the above site refers to is located near the L12 and L13 cans. L12 is 7.8MHz and L13 is 455KHz. it...
can confirm, i modified my cobra 2000 gtl to work with FM and uppers / lowers channels. 26.805 is the freq where i hear FM all the time, sometimes its rapidfire (capture effect) so be prepared to jump the hell in when or if you get a chance
edit: before someone asks, the kit used was from...
One time I used one of those paint / mud / mini-concrete mixers you'd affix to the end of a drill. Basically, I shoved the part you'd put in the drill into the ground, and made a balancing act out of a mounting bracket and coiled 11m radio antenna as a base station. The only factor that matters...
I agree with Greg about holding off on the parts cannon. Another idea is to consider not only where the coax is running but also what just happens to be in the vicinity. Most people think "ok, maybe its too close to the engine bay" but not too many consider the mufflers.
This probably sounds...
