None of the handhelds will work that great using their antenna, but put that same handheld on a good external antenna (such as a Wilson 1000) and some of them will talk just fine.
I have a RatShack handheld, bought for the same purpose as you. I also bought the external mic/speaker, power...
I have a Uniden Grant XL, I was told it was pretty much untouched. I'm sure it has a multiple-turn pot in the clarifier...
Is there a place I can look at the scematics and potential mods that might have been done to this radio...I plan on taking it to DTB to have it aligned, just wanted to...
The XM and the radio are hooked to power at the same location...I was just going to experiment.
The XM cigarette power adapter is the actual cause (it causes issues with the XM off), not sure what else to do but live with it.
Well, not much change from adding the "ground" strap...if anything, it has made the noise increase.
I'm thinking I'm going to pull the power leads from the car's circuits and run straight to the battery...or maybe run the power leads to the battery, and switch it with a relay (so the radio...
Booty: I know where my noise is emanating from...the XM receiver/transmitter. That's not really my issue, as long as I place the mic face down on my leg or touch the radio, the noise subsides. That's not really antenna, is it??
To add to this puzzle, I installed another radio (a like new...
I ran a 2ga wire from the frame to the mounting bracket of my 102...it was also mounted to my toolbox. I know it wasn't a flat braid, but it worked.
And your coax might be bad...might consider changing it.
There is essentially no chassis ground in my setup, the mounting bracket is completely isolated on a plastic center console...there are essentially two electrical grounds, one through the power leads and the other through the coax shield braid. That's why I think I need to run a separate ground...
With the antenna disconnected, no noise. Even with the gain up and the NB off, I only get a very faint sizzle. And you need to really listen to here that.
Plug the antenna in and I have 7 s-units of white noise. Touch the radio or the mic and it drops significantly. I found tonight that...

Some background: I've had this 29 in here before without this problem, then a 3300HP, then a Cobra25, and my Uniden 76. I put the 29 back in after trading some radios...I intend to install a Uniden Grant before too long.
The only one that had issues was the 25, and it was ignition noise...
Have not tried that, will do that on the ride home tonight...
I guess I don't understand why touching the radio causes the static to decrease...and it is consistent, I touch the radio and the noise decreases every time.
