I know there are other mods, but I just replace C174 (1uf 50v) with a 10uf 50v cap and upgrade the AM power regulator. This has always given me good swing and clean audio.

I tune radios on a dummy load using my oscilloscope, I pay attention to the RMS output, and whatever the peak output is, is what it is. But there is nothing like “Dosy Watts” to sell a radio…..
Even properly tuned the Galaxy is a fair Am rig at best, as has been said, SSB is unstable on a good day. And I am surprised that nobody has said anything about the receiver, the poor channel rejection and all that noise on the low end.
If a Grant or a 148 is tuned correctly it sounds...
I have had that problem after upgrading the AM power regulator, you can change D26 (5v zener) to a 3v or 3.3v zener, you may even be able to get away with it a little lower. But dont just chop it out or jump it, its there for a reason.

No, Dosy should be the standard, it shows more so it must be right...
I will continue to use my scope for tuning, the end result is the same or better...
Your confused, its not that we think peak power is fake, its that we believe the reading on the peak meter is fake. 4 watts DK is 4 watts DK regardless of meter, but when you start talking about peak readings you have a PDC watts, Bird watts, my personal favorite "DOSY WATTS", and whoever else...
Not SSB but still a good radio, I think they had 2 versions, one had an 858 PLL, this board would be similar to the Cobra 29XLR I think, the newer version would have the 2816 PLL and should be about the same as a Cobra 1000GTL. If I am wrong somebody please chime in. In either case it could be a...
IF, the word speaks for itself... Do you use a scope, an RMS reading meter, or a Peak reading meter to accomplish this one?
Yes, when the negatives hit zero distortion starts because you are at 100% modulation regardless of what the positive peaks are doing. Think of it this way, when your...
I am with you on this, part of the problem is "loud" has become the way of saying you sound good regardless of the quality of the transmission. Also I think most wannabe techs or "Google Techs" look at the peak watts on a dosy as the gospel truth. A cheap peak reading meter like that has a...
I have been a tech for over 30 years, this statement is just not true...
The only way to check the % of modulation after installing a swing kit is with a scope simply because you can't calibrate a modulation meter with your RF power fluctuating all over the place.
This might get a rise out of some people but here it goes...
Mosfet finals notoriously create more harmonics and if it was tuned on a peak reading meter (especially a Dosy) the harmonics tend to be added into your final Peak watts out even though this is not effective RF power at 27Mhz. I...
