You don't need to put another mic on it, just short the pins that key it up and if you see if its transmitting, if it is, then I would toss another mic on it and try it out... If it wont transmit when you short the pins I'd send it back.....

That looks like a very interesting radio indeed. I'm wondering if those knobs on upper deck on each side are in fact squelch knobs so you dont have to hunt in the menu for the squelch. That is a plus if they are. I think with 9600 on it, there will be options for data. I'm not a data guy...

I assume you are only transmitting one way, and that is half duplexing, where you transmit to your base, it transmits to the repeater, and you in turn listen to that repeaters output with your HT. The same HT you do yout transmitting with on the 440 band,, to your base radio. This will work...
