Many apartment dwellers use a window mounted ground plane. It basically is just two or three 9 foot whips, one mounted vertically (the radiator) and the other(s) (radials) mounted downward at about a 45 degree angle. You can put this antenna just outside your window, on a terrace, or even on...
Some Hams use an internet voice chat website to notify other Hams when they will be on the air, and on what frequency. By using our online handles, we could do the exact same thing! The website is: CB Radio Chat and you can even access it from your tablet or smartphone.
Here's a recent one! Hurricane Sandy came in and took out all the power lines, cable, internet, landline telephones and cell tower! The roads were totally flooded, and covered with downed trees. An elderly gent was hit by flying debris, fell and had symptoms of a heart attack. Luckily for...
Lots of us Hams started out on CB. 11 Meters actually used to be a Ham band! It really just boils down to a couple of people having a conversation over the radio, no matter what that frequency might be.

The weather did a number on my antenna! The only CB talking I'll be doing tonight will be online. Those of you in the same position, can just join me on CB Radio Chat

There seems to be an increase in CB activity in retirement areas. I have seen this in my travels through Arizona and California. Lots of seniors just can't get around as much as they used to, and CB is a wonderful way for them to socialize with others. It's especially helpful to the seniors...
You can sometimes still get good "local" DX in the wee hours of the morning. I find that I can often reach stations 50 to 100 miles out at around 2 or 3 AM when conditions are quiet, especially on sideband! :)
Recently heard that they are coming out with an app that will allow smartphone users to talk to each other phone to phone without cell towers! The higher ups think this could be useful in emergencies. I agree, and it could immediately turn millions of cell phones into direct "walkie talkies"...
