I'm surprised Cobra has stopped making both base stations and SSB radios, as there definately is a market for them! Actually, a Cobra 2000GTL, used ones often sale for what they did (or higher) when they were brand new!

Why not hang a vertical wire from a tree, or from a tree to tree, back to the house.. Either of these may help with your space limitations on 80meters. For 10-20 meters though, I wouldn't use the random wire concept at all.

Why use a random wire, and gamble on tuning the antenna. Why not use resonant lengths for each band, and parallel feed them? I know it's more of a hassle, but you may not need a tuner at all, which would reduce alot of your losses.

The Magnum DX 257 although little, has some quite (low noise floor) receive. Much quieter than most.

Yeah the DX 2547 isn't really worth that much, it's more of a poor mans basic radio.. Not really made for high performance.. A 10 meter galaxy radio (or Ranger) would kill it in power and features.

Are you putting this antenna on the ground? WHy not put it in the air, where it belongs, and not mess with the radials? You don't have the ground loss, when you put the antenna above the ground.

Always tune the antenna for lowest SWR. The better the match, the happier the transmitter/amplifier. I suspece you could have a component in your antenna that isn't handling the extra power well, or have a grond issue.

Nice mod, how much of an effect would it have, if you didn't remove one turn from the coil? Is it possible to due without performing this step, or will the performance suffer too much? Is so, any idea how much?
