5/8wave workman swr issues? Balun? Unun?

A salt water location will provide you with a very very low take of angle and increased gain, it is the best place for your vertical antenna, it's one of the reasons why I can work Western Australia long path with 500mW, it's why a station in Hawaii said I was the strongest signal coming out of...

    Made a Moxon

In addition to what others have said, a conventional 2 element yagi can be configured as either a driver/director, or driver/reflector, there are benefits to both, and it all depends on what you hope to achieve. They both have directivity, which is the more correct way to describe the antenna...

    What did I do?

The only downside with adding a reinforcement to the vehicle roof is that you potentially destroy the very good earth you created with the underside of the mount, ideally any strengthening added to the roof should be bolted/welded to the roof at a number of points to ensure that a good contact...

    Ground plane kits?

A good groundplane is anything but a gimmick, and most people don't use them because they don't understand the benefit, and only usually consider them when they have a problem they think a grounplane will fix, however a groundplane used on it's own, rather than as a part of a complete solution...

    whats inside a gainmaster

Well spotted, I bought a roll of RG58 from a local supplier, ok I admit it was cheap, but I expected better, the lack of a good screen was made up for with the addition of a foil backed plastic wrap under the shield braid, similar to that seen in the pic above, the coax diameter wasn't even...

    Ground radial question

I just ran a quick simulation of a ground mounted dipole over real ground and over perfect ground, the difference is stark, however I believe the difference takes place in the far field, not the near field, so the addition of radials around the base of the antenna will probably have little...

home brewing a gain master ???

From the second linked article I found the following comment of interest However, the J-Pole does not produce a true omni-directional pattern due to radiation from the 1/4WL stub I can see where the 'gain' comes from in the NEC plots, but question whether the same would be the case for the...

home brewing a gain master ???

Interesting video, thanks for sharing your findings, that goes some way to explain what is going on with the Sigma 4, now all we need to find out is why the hoop has the effect it does :pop:

    crapwad of a day

Reads like one of my days  With regard to the VSWR, your mast is probably what is causing the problem if 7 feet of it is parallel with your antenna element, get it up to the top and you may well find the VSWR drop :thumbup1:

    Wilson 5000 rebuild

I've enjoyed reading the thread, and the pictures, so look forward to hearing how you finish off the project

    Tagra BT-104

If you watch the video at 32 seconds you'll notice Tagra themselves call it a 7/8 J Pole in their paperwork, probably where the chap gets the idea from

home brewing a gain master ???

Hi Bob, I know you're a proponent of the Vector 4000 and have read your comments about the same before now, I'd like to get my head around why it works as you, and Marconi, say it does

home brewing a gain master ???

I'm by no means a skilled modeler, I've used both EZNEC and MMANA-GAL, the freebies of course  If you have a jpeg of your Vector 4000 model I wouldn't mind having a look, I'd venture there would be to many segments for the free version of EZNEC.

home brewing a gain master ???

If we are discussing homebrewing a GM, and the complexities of the choke and what it may or may not be doing, then adding a torroidal choke would not only simplify construction, but be an effective choke to boot, I'm not questioning the Sirio version ;) As for modelling, I have every faith in a...

    Icom 706mkIIG or 7000

I changed from an IC706 mkII to an IC7000, very happy with the performance, although neither are used for V/UHF, I still have the IC706, it's a good back up ;)
