It has been amazingly quiet down here, but then these waves of west coast (mostly California) and Australia skip start making their way through. The other 23 hours of the day are dead quiet with conditions prime for local traffic - like talking 40 miles house to boat on SSB with both stations...
I tried several times over the 6th and the 7th. Nothing. Skip conditions were pretty dead across the band. I did hear a 357 on LSB 38. He said he was near John Wayne airport in Los Angeles. One or two other California stations came in, too. 429 in Gettysburg, PA also came in on LSB 38...
SATURDAY, JULY 6th and SUNDAY, JULY 7th
We started the "Reclaim LSB 16" effort a few years back with nets that we'd schedule once a month and then every two weeks. I'm thinking of sticking to something like that going forward.
The 4th of July falls on a Thursday this year. That means lots of...
I bought some 5751s and some EL 84s from Jim Cross many years ago. A buddy of mine and I went over to his operation and he gave us the tour. He definitely had the equipment.
The 1/2 appearing in the ad is the first CB bse station antenna I ever had. It was a decent performer, but was outperformed by their 5/8 wave and the High Gain Super Penetrator. I later bought the Radio Shack .64 omni. It was excellent!
Interesting. I had a Radio Shack store manager assure me years ago that it was a Shakespeare Big Stick with minor modifications made specifically for Radio Shack. And I heard the same from others.
The .64 Radio Shack sold was supposedly a High Gain Super Penetrator with minor tweaks...
LSB 16 and the usual SSB hotbeds from 35-40 were pretty close to dead on Saturday, June 8th. I listened and called out several times. I did hear some Mexican spanish on AM 16, but nothing else on there.
We'll keep trying.
SATURDAY, JUNE 8th
Saturday, June 8th I'll be out on my marine mobile. Currently, it uses a Shakespeare 5223 marine CB antenna. My Cherokee AH 100 SSB walkie talkie will be hooked up to it. I'll start calling and listening at noon.
Hope to hear some of you out there.
It has been weird down here. Usually summer brings lots of afternoon thunderstorm activity and interesting skip options tied to it. I'm going to stay the course and keep trying over the summer. If the ionosphere returns to normal, there should be some skip opportunities waiting for us.
Skip on LSB 16 has been non-existent. LSB 35-40 hasn't been much better. I haven't heard it this quiet in years. The good side of that coin is that I am getting phenomenal local range on AM, FM and SSB.
It obviously isn't going to work all of the time, but it has worked well often enough...
I did not hear a single LSB 16 station all afternoon. That Mexican dispatcher on AM 16 came and went, but that was about it. AM 6 generated some noise, as did AM 28. LSB 35-40 was surprisingly dead.
I'm going to be on a marine mobile tomorrow afternoon. Hoping a little reflection off of...
I was on for 15 minutes starting at 2:00P.M. No LSB 16 traffic at all, but I did hear that Mexican dispatcher on AM. She's come in on several occasions in the past, so I have to assume AM 16 is the channel their taxi service is on somewhere down there.
I'm going to take a break for a little...
I was calling CQ-DX for about 20 minutes. Not only did I not get a single response, I did not hear a single other station out there on LSB 16.
Just to be sure, I scanned the band a few times. There was a little bit of activity coming through on LSB 38. AM 28 had some stations talking skip...
HF propagation prediction for 12-10 meter bands today is in the "GOOD" range for the daylight hours and "POOR" range for night time. I expect that we'll be hearing more skip as we move through the afternoon hours. My Starduster clone does skip well. It will be put to the test in about 10 minutes.
My neighbor has got some gardening florescent lamps that are wiping out my ears. I'm taking the SSB walkie talkie out on the boat tomorrow and will make the effort from the marine mobile.
Yes, sir. We'll do it Saturday, Sunday and Monday. That will give folks flexibility in their schedules. It'll also give us a chance to make up for any days where the skip gods aren't cooperating.
COUNTDOWN TO MEMORIAL DAY WEEK-END NET:
I just wanted to get this reminder out to everyone that we'll try our LSB 16 net again this Memorial Day week-end. We'll follow our usual protocols and start at noon eastern/11:00A.M. central/9:00A.M. pacific on Saturday, May 25th. After that, we'll...
