FM is less subject to the electrical interference that can kill your AM and SSB ears. Since I regularly use CB for house to boat communications, FM on CB has allowed for more reliable communications.
Conditions were strange down here this week-end. It was feast or famine and it was unpredictable. We've got another good holiday week-end, so I'm going to propose that we end 2023 with a DX week-end - the last one of the year.
Like others, I am loyal to the one I own - a Realistic TRC 490 with a Turner Super Side Kick. It is in my banner. I purchased it in 1981 and it is still alive and kickin' and DXin!
There wasn't much skip to be heard down here this past week-end. I heard a few Minnesota stations on LSB 38 yesterday (Sunday) afternoon. Traffic on LSB 39, 37 and 40 was very light. There were a few AM stations on 16.
I say we push for a December 23-24 LSB 16 skip week-end.
New LSB 16 Group Coming - Miami, FL area
It looks like a GMRS group out of Miami is going to take the plunge into CB as well. The story is that many of their club members started in CB and still have their gear. Their current plans are to designate a local (Miami area) AM channel and see what...
CB here in the Keys was never the mess so many of you in bigger cities describe. I know exactly what you mean because CB just up the road in Miami was a total disaster for the longest time, but I haven't heard much local CB traffic up that way in years.
Maybe the time for this effort is...
There is a GMRS radio group based in Miami that is about to launch their CB presence. Lots of the operators are also ham, but there is a push in the group to have a presence on CB because that is where they expect most radio operators to get started. The thinking is that they'll be able to...
I connected with 945 and posts here indicate that some folks even heard me. Keep in mind that my base is 100% barefoot and untweaked, so Uniden Bearcat 980 with a Workman DM 502 base mic feeding an A99 with a FS99 tip. Performance is surprisingly good when Mother Nature cooperates and folks...
A lot of extraneous noise. There was a group hogging LSB 16 earlier. More recently, there was group on AM clogging the channel up. I have heard 945 cutting through the mix a few times. Opportunities have come with different windows, but nothing too steady.
I heard the WDX station outside of Waco, TX talking to New York. WDX 128 was fading in and out. I held a QSO myself with 945. Then there is this one group on LSB 16 that was hogging the channel non-stop from before noon until well after 1:30 - when I left for lunch.
There is activity, but...
I have a few friends over at NASA. Whenever we're going to get together, we do the "T minus...and counting" routine. So, for our "Reclaim LSB 16 Turkey Day Week-end" skip contest, it looks like we're T-minus 38 hours, 10 minutes and counting. Or we can just do like normal people would and...
Base 1: Uniden Bearcat 980 with a Workman DM502 base mic driving an A99 with a Firestick FS-99 tip.
Base 2: Realistic TRC 490 (bought in 1981) with a Turner Super Side kick driving an IMAX 2000.
Marine Mobile: Cherokee AH 100 AM/SSB walkie talkie driving a Shakespeare 5223 8' marine CB...
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 25th and SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 26th LSB 16 NET
The skip has definitely been better these last couple of months. So, as we've discussed already, let's see if the skip gods will be kind to us next week-end and give us skip conditions worthy of us giving thanks for.
Let's stick to...
There was skip rolling yesterday. LSB 38 was active, but there was the usual "11111..." jerk and another idiot or two. But LSB 40, 39 and 35-37 were sharing the wealth.
I dropped to LSB 16 for a while. I made a couple of solid contacts with 948 out of Ridgeway, PA. I heard him call out a...
I've had the CB on all afternoon as I did things around the house. There was plenty of skip rolling in on LSB 35-40. LSB 37 & 38 were at times unusable because of the clutter and the occasional noise maker idiot. I did hear one station calling out DX on LSB 16 a few minutes ago, but he didn't...
I actually keep a log of my 11 meter DX contacts. The DX was hopping big time on LSB 16 around this time last year. I connected clear across the country to AudioShockWave and quite a few others using less than 10 watts on SSB on my Cherokee AH-100 walkie talkie.
The points made above...
