Problem solved. Ended up being 2SA1012 transistor bolted to the back wall of the radio. Ordered a replacement and dropped a TIP42 in there till the mail-man shows up with my part.

Cannot beat the Vintage Turner +2 / 3's. Easy pick-up relatively inexpensive on EBay.

I was just looking in Lou Franklins CB PLL book and noticed that the 2824C was indeed used in the late Midland 6001 and 7001 radios. So, that explains why mine has this chip. Prior to that timeframe they used a 2816.

The PLL in the radio appears to be a factory original. The soldering job is way too clean to have been re-done. Going to try a couple things when I get back home this next week. (traveling this weekend) I'll let you know how it goes and perhaps put up a few pics.
