    MACO VQ3

I think the dbi measurement is fine so long as any gain references include this indicator. Afterall, what we are really looking for is to understand how antenna A (like a 3 or 4 element Yagi) compares to antenna B (like a V quad). If they are within 1 or 2 dbi of each other, in the real...

    11 meter is very quiet?

@Shadetree Mechanic I was the guy near Pottstown trying to get back to you last week. That Vector4 is doing a great job for you. I had a real good copy on you, but seemed like I was having trouble getting back to you. I have 4 element Gizmotchy beam pointed south. Never talked to anyone in...

    FT-840 Display issue

I've got an 840 where the frequency display just dropped a digit. Obviously the display normally would show 7.000.00 mhz, but now is showing 7.000.0 The last digit just went out. There is no flashing of the display. The radio seems to work fine otherwise. The digit did not gradually dim/fade...

    GMRS Midland MXT115

I got this radio at Christmas and am a bit disappointed. I guess my expectations were too high. I hooked this to a 2m/70cm base antenna up about 20 feet to the tip. The range is pretty poor. I can receive the base station on my walkie talkie about 6 or 7 miles out on the 15 watt...

    Magnum 257HP Power Adjustment

My thought exactly. I have an Eagle Sidewinder and the face looks identical to this one. Though the guts must be different as mine only does 20w on SSB.

    Ranger made radios RT1 invasion

What is it with all these Ranger radios? Why do they look like the Cobra 138 that I had in the 70's? Can't they improve on a 40+ year old design?

    Tower stand off mount

Thanks. I was thinking of doing something similar....homebrew. How far do they stick out from the tower????

    Tower stand off mount

I'd like to use a stand off mount on the side of my tower to install a small 2 meter/70 cm vertical antenna. Is there any minimum distance the mount should stand off from the tower to avoid interference and messing up the SWR too much? Is 3 feet enough or does it have to be more? Thanks

    Antenna height

Interesting article. If I understand it correctly, the focus of the article is about DX (skip). Do the conclusions hold true for non-skip (local) conditions? My original question is specifically about local effects of antenna height.

    Antenna height

Thanks for the plots. Unfortunately I don't know how to read them. I thought these showed the radiation pattern, not the expected distance. I believe the point of the article I found was that by raising the antenna height the horizon becomes increasingly farther away, and with a increased...

    Antenna height

I came across a printed article from the late 60's or early 70's that covered this topic. The article indicated that assuming flat ground (I guess think Kansas), that you need to TRIPLE your antenna height like from 20 feet to 60 feet to get almost DOUBLE the range (1.8x) to be exact. So...

    Most Popular Freeband Frequencies

I use to spend a lot of time on the frequencies above 405 back in the 80's. But now days with much less people on CB, there isn't the need to go up there anymore. Heck around here, people are only ever on LSB. All the USB's are unused.

    Antenna height

Is anyone aware of any studies on effect of antenna height on local (<200 miles) receive and transmit? For example, station A has an antenna 30 ft up. He receives station B, 40 miles away with 4 s-units. If station A raises his antenna to 40 ft, would there be any change in how well he...

    11 meter is very quiet?

The least expensive route is to get a 100 watt amplifier to go with your SSB base. However if you want to 'stay legal' and do it on 12 watts, I think you'll be pretty disappointed running only a vertical (antron99) type antenna. I'd recommend a 4 element directional antenna. Even then its a...

best ever base vertical survey ??

I was wondering what everyone thought of the Starduster? Back in the 80's I use to have a 1/2 wave GP from Radio Shack. A station across town ran a StarDuster and always seemed to be able to reach stations I couldn't. Local it seemed it was a bit better than me, but for Skip it was much...

    FURTHEST LOCAL NON-DX CONTACT?

I was not able to reach them, but about a week ago, I heard my two longest ever, non-skip stations. One was in Connecticut (about 150 miles) and the other was in a mobile running 1000w crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel about (200 miles). At first I thought the mobile was skip, but 1...

    11 meter is very quiet?

I remember days back in the early 80's during the summer we'd have periods of time with no 'english' speaking skip, but we'd still be able to hear Mexico and South America. (What ever happend to station Tequila 5 in Acapulco??) However the last 2 weeks have been really dead here in PA, with...

    Polarization question

Take your basic 4 element yagi. It can be mounted Vertical or Horizontal for the desired polarization. What do you get if antenna is mounted at a 45 degree angle, splitting the difference between vertical and horizontal?

    Base Gizmotchy SWR Tuning

Yes, the antenna is close to the ground. Its just on a 10 mast pole stuck in the ground now. Wanted to try to get it tuned before raising the tower up. Don't have an analyzer but I have used the meter before. No reason to doubt its readings.
