Ya I still try to buy the old school 148’s and Grants(sometimes you still find them in excellent shape and “unmolested”). You should get your old ones out of storage and working because they probably work better than most of the new stuff. You know the same is also true for some double barreled...
Ya, you do have a point. There could have been an issue here and there even with the LT Philippines made radios. The Chinese 148’s are mainly junk, but they had many issues with the side mic Malaysians as well(you can ask @Handy Andy as he is very knowledgeable about the insides of radios and...
Same audio chip? Do they receive the same? I only have XL's but a buddy of mine had an LT and as far as receive and being loud it wasn't like the XL (I am not saying that the LT is junk, it is still way better than a lot of the Chinese crap made today). Sometimes (and Cobra is the proof of it)...
It happens, specially if you have a "bit of an addiction". There are places where I just can't do window shopping. I'm sure a few members on here feel the same way. Plus, during these times, might as well get them while you still can!

I do respect the opinion of the more knowledgeable, and have some questions.
The tap on the loading coil, would that be for RF ground?
Is that what they use on some VHF wide band "no ground plane antennas" ? (To be used on the front fender of a pickup or mirror mounted on big trucks).
Which...
Hey Mudfoot I just came across your reply and was wandering if you have the LARSEN mounted in the middle of the roof, front fender or rear of the vehicle?
I am planning on using the NMO30 and 64" whip for 11m and not running more than 100w anyway!
I know that, as far as waterproof, they are hard...
Hey Slowmover, while on the subject, what do you use on your big truck? Dual antennas on the mirrors or a single one in the middle of the roof? I know that with some of the trucks it is a task to get good performance for many reasons(still have try though)!

Yeah, maybe we are, but I don't think there is a cure for the side mic disease, that I'm aware of . On the other hand we might choose to remain deasesed.

There must be good reasons why side mic rules, and one of them is that I just picked up another UNIDEN GRANT XL today.
Looks stock, unmolested and best of all IT IS A SIDE MIC(y)(y)
Good to know, thanks. I am installing a NMO in the middle of the roof of my truck and plan to use it for both VHF and CB, with the option of a fender mount for the VHF if using both without switching antennas. I also favour LARSEN (used them for a lot of years for commercial VHF) but I was going...
Your post is right on the money!!!
Since you said that you run both CB&VHF I am curious about the Antenna. Do you have an NMO mount and you switch coil&whip between the two or do you have a CB antenna in the middle of the roof and the VHF on the fender?(or other location?)
