I heard motormouth here in Va last wednesday for a little while after 6 pm, and channel 6 was just a talk show riot. Somone told someone else, it doesn't get better than this..:tt1:
This was with the TRC 485 in the basement, with an inverted V 1/2 wave dipole also in the basement. I was...
Correction, the analyzer noise floor is -130dBm.
At the 1730L collector (TP 13), with antenna connected (or not), I measured a noise voltage of -125 dBm within a 20 KHz band around 27 MHz, and, receving a carrier at full needle, measured -25 dBm. When I get the new transistor, I'll remeasure...
I'm going to put the 2sc2999E npn in my otherwise stock TRC 458 (uniden 858) in the TR5 position. I have measured the noise floor already, with the 2sc1730L in there, and will get a new number for that after the swap. The NF of the 2sc2999E is about 2.2, and what I can find on the 1730 puts it...
Yes, the TRC 457 and 458 realistics have them. Mine was a little sluggish, and had to cycle it a bunch of times to get repeatable receive performance. I think this unit sat for many years on a shelf, bought at a thrift store in Catlett Va. Probably used on a farm, before cell phones.
Thanks Jim. I looked up TR5's specs (2sc1730L) and the NF is in the 4 range, and Hfe ranges from 40-100, while the 2sc2999 is 2.2 and as a little higher Hfe (current gain...100-200 for the e model), so that looks like a good mod for me to try. Plan to do that one first, then the diodes (1N60Ps -...
I found the RS manual from CB tricks for the TRC-449 is better written than the Sams TRC-458/457 SM, so still fiddling..

With the vertical 1/2 wave dipole with the lowest point about 7 feet off the ground...
The TRC-433 (not touched inside) has more sensitivity and audio clarity than my TRC-458.
Background-
I found a 458 at a local thrift for $10.00, so I have my first CB radio since 1975. It had no mic, so I bought a TRC-433 on eBay for $15.00 plus shipping, since it came with mic too...
