doubling your power is good for about maybe 1/2 s unit on the other end, not so much for increasing range. a final swap is more for propery driving certain amps with a high swing from a low DK.
so it turns out L9 is the culprit, so im just gonna change around EVERY ceramic around it because hell i already got a bit of time and experimentation invested so yea, 2x 82pf, 2x220pf, and a 27p. i will save this old radio with a history including the label with some old timer's CB call letters...
i find doing the TIP120 var dk with a mosfet, i find that putting a 4.7k from the +8v switched tx line makes it all play nice together. the class C setup on the FET depends on the carrier to work. i have a 66xl and i can clean swing from 20mw to 25w
no mylars had to be swapped. a slug near the PLL was just on the edge of not locking so the problem has been solved! mosfet mod thread coming soon.....
ah ok cool. the caps are all brand new bc sometimes with old radios the desire is to "just be done with it" never to crack the case for another 30 years
yea thats what I was thinkin of swappin next lol. so electrolytics being underpowered. never heard of that. so if i replace a 16v with a 25v which happened in a few slots, that has wonk potential?
so not that it changed anything, when i recapped, the main rail was swapped with a 2000uf 25v and...
so it IS a fun project with no angry customer on the other end. came in a lot with some 140's.
the thing is, it did it with the stock final too once i restored modulation, did the rest of the electrolytic recap bc why not, and i thought it came back into line until about 10 minutes AFTER i did...
the more i think about it, i should check the 8v feed on things to see if the voltage is dipping on tx tomorrow. i does kinda seem like SOMETHING is coming outta lock
so there is an intermittent problem that I thought I solved with a recap. but apparently not. im thinking it might be a bad driver but i want to make sure first.
power drops, audio flutters, eventually comes back but about half of it's power output. odd stuff. before it started acting up again...
what I did was put a 47k ohm in the r37 spot, and 10uf on c51. i also replaced the 5.6k at r31 with a 3.3k to increase the mic gain. so we're up from 10w PEP to a nice clean 18-19 from a 5wdk on a stock final. so i think that's what im gonna go with on this weekend project. i havent even...
yea thats what i figured. i ordered some 450 ohm and im about to make some coax baluns/line transformers for either end of the run. also got myself a dpdt knife switch so if theres a lot of lightning the whole system will be shunted to ground
