I just picked up a Pres. Wash. 858 4-pin relic in good shape on a trade, has var. power and does almost 20w. Problem(s) is the mod is low, VR is turned up and mic gain all the way up, tested with an M6B & Tup-9.....should be screamin but the s-meter barely moves unless im whistling in it. 2nd...
Re-cap the entire radio since its 21yrs old. There's 2 limiters in 148's one for AM and one for SSB. Im guessing you clipped the wrong one. If its a nice radio dont use it in your vehicle till spring, lol.
This mod really hasnt been presented or explained in a much easier way to do it. I know i can do this mod, but there's really not a step by step instruction list. Im very interested in the duel final mod, i can ask Roadstar for a complete list of parts and detailed instructions in english for...
I did this mod on my lil 959, not a dramatic night & day contrast but much, much better RX. Anything to get rid of white noise or annoying hiss we all listen to is an improvement. Seems like everyday i hear my locals say "what a high noise level today" i look down and i have a 1-3db signal.....I...
A Saturn is a 4 pin radio, not 6. A 6 pin is for the ch. up & down on the stock mic. Good luck on your Saturn's echo, see if you can use the switch still to turn it off and use a matching double pot somewhere.
I did this mod and diodes, not a night & day difference but my recieve is much quieter. When my locals complain about their high noise level, i look down and my needle is at a 1-3db. Worked for me for $12, lol.
Get better (thicker) coax, then maybe have your 200gtl tuned. Remember the 200's & 150's were Cobras attempt (failed) to make a 10 meter radio. Could be a splatter box.
Yes, keep the var. wide open. It's designed to be a driver for a bigger amp. Also, ive heard the pot is the weakest link on Texas stars, just run it turned up and talk-away.
That Diamond meter is not very generous, atleast if you're gonna document/video your work use a Dosey and a Bird like Tim does. Or a Bird with the PEP option. I enjoy watching these vids, i try not to nit-pick though.
I dont like the sound of lip-smacking with NC mics, why do ppl eat em so much (must be the lip guard, lol) M6B has always been the best, clearest and loudest but when turned up they can pick up air. Ive tried Road Devils, tends to squeal to easy, stupid slider on the side. Plus the red is too...
Personally, i dont like the Road Devil.....squeals like a pig once ya turn it up a tad. M6B's are rusty & trusty, except the PTT button hurts my finger after a long conversation. I would just keep using the 636 with the mic gain turned up to a good understandable level.
You wont be able to use those kind of led strips for the buttons, they get yellowish from age and/or smoking cigs in the house. Off the top of my head there's 6-8 3mm's in there then a couple 5mm in the display, some models they need to be heavily modded for color change. Do alot of research...
