    Copper J-Pole Antenna

J Pole antennas are just so-so. They work, but have very little gain. For a tough antenna you can throw in a go kit, they are fine, but for your home, there are far better. To save some money and have an antenna that really gets out there, 8.3 db gain on VHF and 11.7 db gain on UHF, get the...

might be picking up a used ft-2900r... questions

I found a fan that fits under the bracket and is the size of the cooling fins, about 4" X 4". I put a switch on it and now when I'm having a long rag chew, I just turn the fan on. It's quiet enough not to bother you any and sure keeps the radio from getting too hot. I put fans on a few of my...

Looking for a 2/70 vertical base antenna

The OPEK UV-300 or something similar as to the 300 part makes a fiberglass vertical, 8.3 DBi on 2M and 11.7 DBi on 70. It costs $100.00 and is every bit as good as the Comet or Diamond version at $200.00. The one I have talks fantastic. I compared it to a Diamond X-300NA, same height and...

tower mounted FRS radio, would this be legal?

I've got far better things to do, and they involve Ham equipment. Use your FRS for what it was intended for and get your ham ticket if you want to talk distance. Much easier. John

    HF antennas

Have you thought about a "GAP" brand Challenger vertical. It only requires four 25' ground verticals, it does not work better with more than 4 and sometimes 25' is too long on the verticals. The verticals are just for the 40 meter band. I just bought one and hope to plant it next week. It has...

    First DX on LSB

And all this time I thought the maximum you were allowed to talk on CB was 165 miles. You want to talk DX, get your ham ticket. John

    Best program for baofeng handhelds

If you have a Wouxun, use the Commander software, it's the fastest and most trouble free software I have ever used on a Handheld. I don't think they have it for the Boafeg, but you can check. John

    Wouxun Question

Thanks Doc, If it really is part 90 certified, I'm happy as can be because it really is a very good radio. The part 90 cert is my only worry. So as long as it's good, I'll sure keep and use it. 73's John

    Wouxun Question

I have seen versions with the 2.5Mhz step in them, I just got sloppy and assumed the radio I bough had the 2.5, not 5 as the lowest. My real concern is there a number that would ID the radio as being accepted by the FCC, but there is no number. It has the words "International Model" etched into...

    Wouxun Question

Thank you for the replies. I have the correct Commander program, so I'm OK there. I got the radio from china, so that's why I wonder if it's really part 90 cert. If I ever get another, I'm buying it from a US distributor. The plug in for the programming cable went bad the second time I used...

    Replacement Batteries

The batteries will basically be the same. Just make sure the new one has the same capacity or more than the stock one. If the stock one is Lithion Ion, be sure the replacement is also. You should have no problems with the replacement batteries at all. John

    Hi gain HT antenna

It's supposed to give the radio 2.1 dbi gain. In real terms, DBI gain is not much, but the stock antennas stink. The aftermarket antennas do help quite a bit. I'd save the stock antenna for use when repeaters are in range and use the aftermarket for simplex when you need as much range as...

    Wouxun Question

I have a KG-UV6D, it is the 5Mhz version. Is there a way to program it for the 2.5KH? Also, from what I understand, it's a land based mobile. I want to know what frequencies I can legally program it to such as VHF/UHF Ham, GMRS, MURS ect or is it for licensed business radio only. I have all the...
