I am trying to set up a stealth base antenna. I attached a 102 whip to a metal pole...figured the metal pole would act like the counterpoise.
Got everything hooked up, Grant XL, rg8, and ended up with a 1.7:1 on 20. All indications point that the antenna is too long, and I've already cut 3...
By barefoot, I was implying a tuned but not modified radio...again, guys get hung up on the quantity and forget about quality.

Depends on the radio...what mic sounds good on one radio might sound horrible on anther.
I swap between a RK56 and Astatic 636L depending on the radio I am running.
I have also owned a Skythumper, and the factory-provided Ranger SRA-198 on my General HP40W sounds better than the RK56 or...
The more surface area the better the signal can travel on it...current travels through wire, signal travels on it? From what I remember, the bigger the better for bonding?
While we have a wetter climate around here, I had that cable deal all over the US...over 200k on the last truck alone. If you think about it, its floating in the air most of the time anyway. Maybe mine didn't touch that much? Never had anyone tell me it was sparking...I would think a truck...
And what are you going to ignite?
You're talking an internal combustion engine, in an ambient atmosphere...not exactly working in an intrinsically safe environment. No different than the fool on bald tires with the belts showing driving past you on the highway...or the guy (like me) with...
That's me...after bouncing from stock, to peaked radios, then the big radio, and then getting into the small 2-pill amp, then the 4-pill amp, then the 5-pill...I'm back to a 100-watt barefoot radio in one car and a 2-pill behind the radio in the other.
If I had to do it again (from what I've...
I ran a stock 959 into a 4x1446 and got around 300 watts of clean power from it...I think a well-tuned, barefoot, type-accepted radio into a straight 4-pill is about ideal.
I think 8 watts into a 1x4 will easily saturate the amp...and not in a good way. I want to remember I was running less...
In place of the static straps (which I needed on the last two Dodges 2500s but not this Silverado 2500HD for whatever reason) you can install a piece of steel cable and allow it to touch the ground. I used a vinyl-coated steel cable for one main reason...those static straps don't like being...
In my unjustified opinion, that first 100 watts is the most effective bang for the buck; then it costs a lot of $$ to make a difference from there...anything over that is either bragging rights or foolishness.
Don't get me wrong, I've had the 1x4 that would tickle 850w on a feel-good meter...
I'd be more worried about RF getting into the truck's electronics, not whether the truck can run the amp...might want to research for your particular truck until you find someone whose done it, some newer vehicles don't like any amount of errant RF. Not trying to be a downer, just throwing out...
DTB actually dug through a batch of junkers in his shop to get slugs to replace the ones some other hack job had removed from my radio...seems funny he'd take the time to replace mine but remove yours??
Actually its yes...
Wilson sells and/or sold center-loaded whips to shorten the whip on the Wilsons. I have one in the garage right now that I've never used.
I'm not saying they work well, just that they sell/sold them for this very purpose...
Well, got it done...didn't use a cutting board, but used a regular pine board instead (actually an old stair tread). I figured its going to be a PC78, in a rental car, and its mine...so its not like it'll be getting abused or a highly desirable radio. I got enough wire to sit it on the back...
