Fix Malaysia 148gtl or get new radio?

I have some experience with a soldering iron but am nowhere near an electronics technician. Is this something I can do myself, or does it need to be shipped off to a tech to get fixed? Btw, thanks for the info so far Robb

Fix Malaysia 148gtl or get new radio?

I've had this Taiwan 148gtl for several years now after buying it at a pawn shop. Finally got an astron power supply so I can run the radio in the house, but I've notice that after it's been on for an hour or more, I have to clarify the ssb signal sometimes to get people back on frequency. I...

Merlin Base Up Close and Personal

359, I feel your pain on the puddle droppin out on ya..sucks when that happens. As far as the antenna, hopefully the manufacturer will improve his quality control and everyone can be happy (well except for the 2 s-units or whatever over the competition antenna crowd)

Merlin Base Up Close and Personal

359, I'll agree it's not the easiest thing to weld, but if the metal is cleaned properly and you use a welding machine with a high frequency unit used to weld aluminum, it will look beautiful, and the aluminum itself should fail before the weld ever comes close to cracking. I guess I just...

Merlin Base Up Close and Personal

As a former welder fabricator, I would also question the change from a all around weld to a partial one. If the prototype weld cracked and it was all the way around, a partial weld may flex some before it breaks but it will break. In the grand scheme of things, any forces on the antenna should...

    Kenwood station

i have a kenwood ts-940sat with optional am filter, matching sp-940 external speaker and also the mc-60a desk mike. Taking offers as the wife wants the radio equipment gone. I think the radio by itself it around 800 in it's condition so please no comments offering to buy it for 300 or...

    In your opinion....

quoted from shockwave in another thread: "Perhaps a better demonstration showing how amplifier output impedance does not impact reflected power would be using the modern solid state HF rig with an automatically calibrated SWR meter. As Bob mentioned the output can only be matched to 50 ohms...

    In your opinion....

Okay, so if you can get full output of the amp on a low variable setting, is your impedence going to change? Aside from the problems related to the switch itself, is this an acceptable way to run a radio/amp setup? I was under the impression that you had to set up the radio to drive the amp...

    In your opinion....

i was only talking about the radio itself. I understand that the amplifier attenuates the input signal from the radio which accomplishes the same thing and maybe I misread the post, but I posted what I did because of some guy reading that and saying "I don't need to adjust my dead key, i can...

    In your opinion....

the variable on the amp would be for output from the amp not input from the radio. You can't adjust the dead key or output of the radio from a control on the amplifier.

hundreds of watts per 2879 ???????????????????????

a point to think about regarding distortion. A clean home amp used to have a spec of .1% distortion from 20-20k hz. Newer models are drastically lower. I have read before that the human ear can "tolerate" 10% distortion in some frequencies before it becomes readily apparent. The speakers we...

hundreds of watts per 2879 ???????????????????????

are you surprised at all booty monster? i mean, that's one of the first things i noticed here compared to other forums. Here, people can discuss things even if they don't agree. Some of the other ones chastise anyone who doesn't agree and comform lol. I'd rather learn here :)

    maco duster

I bought a maco duster from a guy and am trying to get some information about it. It has 2 ge 2057 tubes in it. Seems 8950 is a direct replacement. What kind of drive does this amp require? What kind of output if the tubes are good? The key circuit is missing. Will it still work? I took...

high swr when more power is added

Im sorry if that's how I'm coming off...That is not my intention. I'm asking questions because I want to learn how these things work. As far as arguing, that is not my intention either. In any way. I will educate myself before posting in this kind of technical discussion again. My...

high swr when more power is added

Then you have 500 ohms out of the transmitter into a 50 ohm antenna. I thought that was really bad? I thought the whole point was matching a 50 ohm output to a 50 ohm load. How does this not wreak havoc with such a difference? What is the "buffer" that makes it possible to run with such a...

high swr when more power is added

As a newer operator, I would just like to say that I for one greatly appreciate those on here who are generous enough to share their knowledge with us. It's much easier to be able to focus on learning something if you have the right information to start with rather than wading through piles of...

that is nice. what radio do you use it with? what kind of pc interface and software? Is something like that available for use with older radios that don't have a direct pc interface?
