    coax length-LDF4 heliax

Does coax length matter on a base like it does in a mobile (for example 3 ft. increments)? My antenna is I-10k roughly 58' from ground to bottom of antenna. Coax is Andrew LDF4 and will go down the length of the tower, almost to ground, where the shield will be grounded, then go back up the...

    R model Mack grounding

The nice thing about an R model, is that the cab is steel, so you can use a roof mount. We use a wilson 1000 roof mount, with a short load whip, and have perfect SWR. Gets out and hears real well, too.

    magnum 257

Yeah, I did ground quite a bit, but I must need to do more. My other vehicle is a ranger, also, and I have that annoying fuel pump whine. Could I just use one or 2 of the snap on ferrite cores over the wires right before they go into the tank, and do they have to be wrapped?

    magnum 257

It does get worse when I rev it up, and yes, I can hear the alternator, as well as the spark plugs, but it goes away when the antenna is disconnected. The wire I used to bring power to the radio, is either 12 or 14 guage, and I have a ferrite choke with 3 wraps about an inch from the...

    magnum 257

OK, when I disconnect the antenna, ALL noise goes away. The truck just had a complete tune up. If I'm driving down the road at 60 mph, I get 30 dBs noise on the midland, and if I go to neutral, and shut off engine at 60, it gets quieter, but as I go past power poles, lights, etc, I still get 30...

    magnum 257

It's run directly off the battery, and I even tried installing an inline noise filter and ferrite chokes, but nothing helped. It's definately picking it up through the antenna, because I can hear the ignition systems of other cars driving by me, neon lights, power transformers, streetlights...

    magnum 257

I had a midland 79-290 mounted in the dash, and took it out because of noise, but the magnum will fit in the same spot perfectly. For the time being, I'm using a Grant XL, just leave it on the passenger seat, lol. There's no where to mount a radio in my vehicle, except in the dash, under the...

    magnum 257

I've done a lot of searches on the 257, and that's what I keep reading about. I know they're not audio monsters, but I just don't want to replace one noisy radio with another one. I wish I knew someone locally that had one, so I could try it out to see if I can live with it.

    magnum 257

Has anyone ever tried turning down the RF gain on one of these? A friend of mine had a radio that was so noisy, that he almost sold it to buy something else, but found that all he had to do, was turn down the RF gain enough to drop the static and noise level. then he could hear stations that he...

Going to buy a new radio in 2 weeks. Opinions wanted

Magnum M-1 all the way. Super loud after tune and clean audio. I have no problem talking to base stations 25+ miles away, and that's without an amp. I'm very happy with it.

rf sheilding of computer in vehicle

The only thing he can really do, is make sure everything is grounded really good, his power wire should be fine BRAIDED(not just stranded) and be the right size. The computer itself should be sheilded from the factory and grounded, but the wires going in and out the computer are'nt. I'm sure...

    OLD tube radio - variac?

A friend of mine has an old Tram D201A as well as a couple other old tube radios, that are in mint condition, but have'nt been plugged in for at least 15-20 years. I heard that to get them up and running again, we need to start them up slow through a "variac" to prevent damaging the caps. My...

What is the loudest export radio?

I have to throw in my 2 cents... Loudest export I've heard, is my magnum M-1. It's crystal clear, but so loud everyone tells me they have to turn their volume down when I talk, and that's with an astatic 636. Loudest CB I heard has to be a Peaked and tuned uniden PC78.

Since nobody believes a 148/grant will do 25+ watts...

Heck yeah, I've seen those kinds of numbers out of 148s and grants quite a few times. I don't see why it's so hard to believe. My 25 nw st does 24 watts peak.
