    Coax puzzle

I was using cheap rg58 coax going to my Antron 99 and SWR about 1.3:1. Today replaced the cheap stuff with rg8x and now SWR at 1.6:1.Better coax, better connectors, why higher SWR?The only difference was using 17ft. of cable instead of 18ft.I had before.Still using 58 for jumpers-could there be a...

    Best antenna for this car!!

I just put a little wil mag mount on the roof of the wife's car to replace a junk antenna and it works great! Tuned to 1.3 SWR on both ch 1 and 40-won't handle much power but a good little antenna. You could get the 1000 or 5000 if you want to run an amp.

    Flea market finds

The SBE just sold to a collector on Ebay for $39.00 plus $10.00 shipping-so much for $15.00 being too much!

    My First CB Base/Mobile Antenna

My first base was a Navajo 23 channel with a Crossbow [radio shack] base antenna. My mobile was a Hy Gain 23 with a bumper mount 102" whip-both setups worked great for me at the time!

    Magnetic antennas

It was a piece of junk from the Antenna Farm-when I complained about it the guy from the Antenna Farm said "It is my understanding that anything below 3:1 SWR is acceptable and suits the needs of most people"! This moron is in the business of selling radios and antennas and actually told me...

    Magnetic antennas

The reason I asked is I bought a cheap mag mount center loaded antenna for the wife's car and I could not tune it to less than 2.5:1 SWR. You get what you pay for-I just ordered a Little Wil instead. The wife doesn't want a big antenna or any holes drilled in her car!

    Magnetic antennas

Do magnet mount antennas need some kind of capacitor to make up for the lack of a ground or does the magnetic field do that?I see magnet mounts for sale that just have the coax shield soldered to the magnet holder.

    What is it?

A lady gave me this thing her husband made-he was into ham radio. It's a metal box with a power cord and 2 lugs on the side for wires. On top of the box are a rocker switch, red and green lights, and what looks like a typical 4 pin mike socket.Inside the box are a transformer,12V mechanical...

    Flea market finds

The simple fact is things were made to last in days of yore-unlike today's "disposable" society. How many people bother to repair an electronic device these days instead of throwing it away and buying a new one? If you can even find someone to repair your radio it may cost more than buying...

    What is a superwhack pack??

Other than "peaking" or getting a good microphone I tend to stay away from modifications and avoid radios that have been modified. You never know what some butcher has done to a radio until you see smoke signals or people tell you that you sound like s**t.You can always get an amp if you need to...

    Flea market finds

I have since tested the SBE and it works.I lowered my price on Ebay because I would like to see it go to a collector who would take good care of it.I've had many old radios over the years and the majority of them worked fine but you always take a chance with vintage electronics.I enjoy finding...

    Flea market finds

I did put it on Ebay-if my price is not met I will keep it for myself. How often can you find a NEW 30 year old radio? It was never even taken out of the box!

    Flea market finds

I bought 2 radios at the flea today-one is a little Cobra 19DX I got for $5.00 that I will put in the wife's car [I use a 29LTD in my truck].The other was a NEW in the box SBE Tahoe vintage 40 channel that I paid $15.00 for.The SBE was never unpacked and is absolutely mint.I can't find much info...

I found some clamp on ferrite cores and they seem to cut down on the noise considerably-thanks!

    148/final kit

The Phillipine or Malaysian radios were of better quality than the Chinese rigs-if you have a nice Phillipine 148 it's best not to modify it so it retains it's value. You can talk pretty far on 12 watts sideband when skip is good-no need for dual finals.

I took the foam piece from a headset I had and it fit the Sadelta like it was made for it.

    Noise

My base is plugged in by necessity with some appliances and I get some line noise. The radio has a noise blanker but could I use a ferrite core or some other device to cut the noise?

New guy needs help with base station

Spend the money on the antenna-look for a used power supply and radio.Thrift shops, flea market, garage sales-I have bought radios and power supplies for as little as $5.00.Post a wanted ad on craigslist-I got a Cherokee base station for $20.00 that way!
