The likely culprit is the preamp circuit. It functions as a switchable device in and out of the bypass of the main relay.

I think there is a singular diode all by itself on the metering board by the front. Usually they always break open when there are problems like this, or shorted tubes etc. check to see if its still there.

Tubes are easier. Once people get a chance to experience how fun these hg transistor amps are, they usually wind up buying a tube amp after they dick around with it long enough .

The next step in diagnosis is going to be to remove connections on the relay except for the one to the jacks, and start using a meter to check for continuity in and out of the relay keyed and unkeyed to make sure the signal is getting through the relay

With the amplifier off and unkeyed simply take a multimeter and look for continuity between the antenna and the driver jack. If you have continuity then that means the amp should be receiving and watts should also be flowing through the other way with the amp in standby or off.

Id like to see a meter on the input side looking at the input tune. If the filament choke is not sufficient or up to snuff you will get a symptom as you described. The input tune will look like its varying and be unsteady. Or could be bad 50 year old tubes.

Replace the tune and load caps. Problem solved. You have a 50 yead old amp that arced a cap or two. Consider yourself fortunate. Rf parts has them.
