I was always told to be careful doing that, using a center tap transformer for a full wave rectifier in a full wave bridge and not using the center tap. I was told that sometimes the installation is not rated high enough for that across the transformer
Since everyone can just get 320a leeces now its not a thing plus guys run boost. Also contrary to popular opinion you can run more than one supply per alternator. Im also talking avg.
Shhhh dont give all the secrets away...
But as far as inconvenience, i mean, its not as easy as a 2 pill but when you can see three ac alts make 80k plus its really puts power and alternator use into perspective. Just key the mic and rev a little. If each key is at a sightly different plate...
Nahhhh its fine. The biggest issue with the 6000 is the higher plate v required.
The biggest benefit of the dual 3000 box is a simpler filament situation and slightly higher plate dissipation rating.
I have said the same thing about plate transformers for years, right up until last month. I had a guy with a base amp and it ran fine, made all the watts, no issues. But it stunk. Smelled like burning plastic. Now he had this since new for over a year and the trans was new. I came over, and gave...
Once you try to build a proper 32 pill mobile going ac makes alot of sense. Especially with the pills nowadays.
There is loads of trapped potential in an alternator once you make it unregulated and tap the ac. If you have never run ac you just have no idea what can be done . One alt on an ac...
W8ji speaks alot about how and why he designed that choke the way he did. He basically said a series resonance was inevitable on that amp so he chose to "park" a resosnance on a band where it wouldn't be used, 27mhz. It makes me wonder if that's why all the broken ones Ive seen have been used on CB.
An open plate choke or lead somewhere is where I'd look, something on that little parasitic board above the tubes, or look on the supply board for a spot where a diode used to be. Usually they evaporate and you get 0 reading on plate.
People make a big deal about turns ratio and capacitors on these transformers. Yeah they all make a difference but remember you're just making a handshake. If it tunes out it tunes out. You'll notice differences but many combinations will work
