    Another Saturn bias issue

Thought of that myself and yanked all the disc caps out of the RF section to check. All check good and very close to their respective values. Gonna put all these back in, then look over very closely with bench mag glass to check for any cracked traces or bodged joints. I guess I will try it out...

Is that BSide ESR02 Pro better than the standard TC1 or FNRSI component testers? I kinda like the look of that one.

    Another Saturn bias issue

I'm gonna try the bias circuit changes on one of my personal Saturns after I'm done with this one. The guy wants it stock, therefore I can't tinker with the bias circuit on this one. I finally did run across a good Mitsubishi 2166 though, after going through a dozen or more I finally got one...

    Another Saturn bias issue

Oh, I learn something every day, lol... I think all my 2166's are flat anyway. Highest HFe I can find is a 21 which is well below the minimum point for a 2166. I've got plenty of 2078' 2029, 2092, etc... but no more 2166. Gotta figure something out. Would a very low hfe cause a high current...

    Another Saturn bias issue

Hmmm, just tested 4 other 2166's that I had in the parts box (used), and all of these show that diode symbol across the collector to emitter. But my 2078, 2092, 1969, 2312 transistors don't show that diode symbol between C and E. Maybe all my parts 2166 that I yanked out of old radios is shot...

    Another Saturn bias issue

This is what I'm used to seeing (minus the low hfe). 2SC2312

    Another Saturn bias issue

Hmmm, never seen this before: NPN BJT tests as a good BJT NPN but notice the diode from collector to emitter on test result screen? 2SC2166

    Another Saturn bias issue

Got another Galaxy Saturn on the desk today. Issue: Keeps blowing finals. Evaluation: Passthrough regulator is fine. AF regulator is fine. Pre-driver is fine. Driver is fine. Replaced both finals with good ones. No swing mods. Output caps test as good. All traces have firm joints. Bias diodes...

    Another Saturn issue

Yep, you were 100% correct Brandon. I yanked out FL2 and replaced with another one. BAM, AM receive immediately jumped up to exactly what my Saturn shows on AM, actually a little too high, lol... Realigned receiver section and now AM receive matches my Saturn. I did tap/scratch on this other...

    Another Saturn issue

Just compared AM signals with my Saturn (had it hooked up and turned on for past hour) on top of this Saturn by quickly switching the coax. All signals on this Saturn are around 3db lower than on mine. Mine rests around 3.5 s-units on hash noise (with my AC whine in it) while this one rests on...

    Another Saturn issue

Ok, so it's all good. I'm still gonna do some voltage checks on the AGC circuit. Reason being, I'm having to crank VR1 above 3/4 way up for signal reading to correspond to sound (what I think the signal should be) but VR2 seems right (actually a little too high). Reason for concern is, on...

    Another Saturn issue

Got a question though... I just noticed in these Saturn type radios that C151 and C220 are 4.7uf 50 volt caps. I've been using 4.7uf 25/35 volt caps instead. Would this drop in voltage rating affect performance of any type?

    Another Saturn issue

Aha, I think I found the problem. A lead on L7 had a solder blob touching to its IFT ground tab. Will give an update later when it's more active around local. Seems like SSB came up also.

    Another Saturn issue

Haven't checked FL2 yet, but I did notice if I push it back a little and then pull it back forward a little I can hear a change in receive on AM, makes no change in SSB though. Is that an indication of a bad FL2?

    Another Saturn issue

SSB seems ok. Both USB and LSB show about a constant 2 to 3 db of signal on noise, as though the receive is too high. AM on the other hand shows 0 signal on noise floor and quiet until someone keys up. VR1 is set a tad above halfway (about where all these Saturns rest when adjusted). VR2...

    Another Saturn issue

Got another Saturn on the desk. The issue is low receive (it's got receive but just a little low). Evaluation: All the electrolytic caps were either high esr, shorted or dried up. Everything else looks great. Replaced all electrolytic caps with new ones. After: Receive came up some but not...

    Galaxy Saturn low transmit

Already got a few radio checks over the air. Reports are "That audio is loud as ****" by three people.

    Galaxy Saturn low transmit

Got this one back going. The 1 ohm resistors (with the beads on one lead) at the first final bias VR and at the second final bias VR was shot. Replaced both. Both final bias VR adjustments were way out of tolerance. One showed around 28 ohms, the other showed around 34 ohms. Out of circuit of...

    Excalibur (3600 board) stuck...

Maybe just an employee error, first time I ever ran across any bad ones from nich.

Nichicon, only brand I been using for the past several years. But seems like high demand for Nichicons has resulted in less quality control.
