I echo what everone else said.
1) A high properly tunned antenna.
2) Keep the radiated RF off the coax..choke, balun.
3) Stock radio, working low pass. Dont pinch da carrier.
4) Good RF connections...water,rust,Chicom made connectors..all bad.

Check at the antenna with a jumper to see what it is at the antenna. It should be darn near flat across the 40 channels. Its not bad for low power operation. But a 1.7:1 will cause stress on any amp or coax connections.
A lot of swang watts are just harmonics. But lets assume it's not, are you really louder. Yes, no, maybe. Just buy an amp for the desired ouput and be done with it.

I own both Chris's and Jay's 5/8 wave antenna. And personally perfer Jay's because it's so damm light! And Jay's design bends much better with the constant afternoon winds here in the foothills. No real difference beyond that, but always interested in newer technology.
