What is so special about a GE superbase anyway?

I'll check that this morning. The cap thatvthe clarifier was connected to had 8.06v on it. I'll see whats going on there and report my findings. 73s

    Cobra 142 GTL

My 142 has a problem with a 10k drop so each channel like 39 is actually 38. What isvthe 10k + and what is the 10k - mod? If all itnisbis cutting a trace and applying either a voltage or ground, please advise. Id like to use this to set my radio back to correct channels. I dont see any mods on...

Cobra 142 gtl with a few problems

Bought this 142 that had a bunch of mods in it. I generally tolerate a clarifier mod but nothing more unless it is to unrestrict poor modulation. Anyhow, this 142 has a 10k frequency shift downwards. So for an example, channel 38 on this radio is on 39. Channel 1 is below 1. Channel 2 is the...

What is so special about a GE superbase anyway?

It starts to resonate and pick up channels at about 1/16 to 1/8 down the hole i cant aee any mods that might have been done. Not sure why a drop in 10k would have supported his upper and lower frequency mod either as all it was is 3 crystals and a tuning cap on each. Very basic mod. There is a...

What is so special about a GE superbase anyway?

Im gonna tackle that part soon. Im presentlyninto a 142 gtl that is off set by 10khz and I cant figure out whatvwas done to it. Someone put in a whole slew of mods and did a lousy job. Burnt wires, exposed parts, poorly done clarifier that I think fried the clarifier pot and a 10k shif upwards...

What is so special about a GE superbase anyway?

Recapped both big boards so far. Tried it out, still has the light flickering. There must be a switching transistor or its associated circuitry thats intermittent. With the volume fully down, i can hear the noise like crackling in the speaker. What a pain in the butt.

What is so special about a GE superbase anyway?

Well, good news and bad news. I ordered the VCO from the UK, installed it today and the radio worked for about 10 minutes. Then, the transmit light started to flicker and I lost my receive. Is this a common issue? Anyone know what does that? Thanks and happy new years!

Realistic TRC 457 heats up, drifts, un adjustable

With the original 3 amp fuse and in transmit on ssb with a tone, it does not display dimmed lights and not blowing the fuse. Nothing appears to be surging. Im probably going to replace the T03 anyway. Since I put in a fan the heat is way less. In rx mode its a normal temp. The only time it gets...

Realistic TRC 457 heats up, drifts, un adjustable

Well,, I caved. I put in the unlocked clarifier mod. With that mod comes a higher capacitance for c110 which provides more stability. Another feature is that vr9, ct2, ct3, and ct6 all become mote. Leaving me just ct4 and ct5 as my only required adjustments. I wish they had multi-turn tunable...

Realistic TRC 457 heats up, drifts, un adjustable

Hmmmm..... interesting. There are 2 sources of hookup for the 457. Its a base but has a mobile hookup. Completely independent. I'll hopk up a power supply and then see if it holds an alignment whats really odd about the alignment is that once you align the ssb, the AM goes off freq by as much...

Realistic TRC 457 heats up, drifts, un adjustable

Its been recapped.I tested every cap that I put in because I've had bad caps sold as new to me in the past and that created some serious power supply issues. I only discovered this bad disc once I started working on it, and the first step was to check to ensure 13.8V. I found 17 volts which put...

Realistic TRC 457 heats up, drifts, un adjustable

Yes. No conductivity and I do get an adjustable voltage now since I replaced the resistive shorted disc cap.

Good point! I havent done it yet but yeah it would be conductive. I'll stick with the white stuff. Thanks!

Realistic TRC 457 heats up, drifts, un adjustable

Done! No kidding! Who needs a power mic when you have mod like this. I had to tone it right down its a screamer! Thanks for that tip! Sadly, I am still having constant issues with ct2, ct3, and AM. Turn one and it offsets the other. Then adjusting AM through it all out of alignment again. If I...

Realistic TRC 457 heats up, drifts, un adjustable

I also have another annoying issue with my audio. People say it sounds pinched. Even if its cranked lower than specs. I dont use AM do I like clean audio. Is there a mod or trick I can do to clean up the audio and get rid of the pinch sound? Its like the amc kicks in slightly after I modulate...

Also, i never run full 12 watts out. I tune it at about 9.5 to 10 ssb and 3.5 am.

Realistic TRC 457 heats up, drifts, un adjustable

I picked up a buck power converter. I think it willwork great and its small enough to fit exactly imside the transistors heat sink space. I can use all the components and it will replace only the transistor. Problem is max draw is 3amps. Schematic says the radio uses 2.6amps full ssb mod. I'll...
