Now I'm getting somewhere on the receive volume.
After replacing the 7222 audio IC I checked all voltages on the chip and everything looks right. Although the volume still wasn't quite right, but it is a lot better than it was I rechecked the caps I put in before and checked for bad solder...
Replaced the audio IC (7222) with a known working one.
Still low volume, not as low as it was. Now, I have to turn it up just a little over halfway instead of almost wide open. No more strange issues or sounds when cranking volume wide open, but still low.
Voltages now (in correct order this...
Pin 10 lifted:
Pin 10 pad shows 0v
Pin 10 lead (lifted) shows 10v
All other pins still show the same as with pin 10 lead soldered.
Shouldn't pin 10 lead (when lifted) be slightly less than pin 1? If the lifted pin 10 lead shows 10v, then wouldn't that mean the 7222 isn't amplifying?
I've already got another 7222 yanked out and ready to put in this radio, but before I remove the one that I think may be bad I figured I would check the things you guys mentioned above:
Lifted pin 1 (the pin showing 10v). Checked the pad and had 0v, checked the lifted pin 1 lead itself and had...
Wow, I just got home from Sunday Diner with my locals. We do this every weekend. Anyway, I had a text from another local who is also a ham stating he had some for me on my porch. I went to check and sure enough there was a box sitting there. I brought it in, opened it and was shocked to see a...
Sorry for delay. Had some other things to take care of.
TA7222 IC:
1 - 10.75
2 - 7.12
3 - 0
4 - 0
5 - 1.17
6 - 1.17
7 - 0
8 - 0
9 - 6.78
10 - 14.10
That's with RF gain wide open and all the way down, as is with the volume control also.
C175

- 7.12
RF gain control, wide open
Outer lead -...
I just got off the phone with the owner of this radio with the low volume (receive signals are great, just low volume) and he informed me that the squelch control is the same way, he has to crank it almost wide open to silence out even the weak stations. I checked the squelch VR adjustment and...
Check for voltage on the RF gain wiper lead (center) with RF gain turned down to halfway.
Also, check R233 for voltage on the rear lead, should be the same as the voltage on wiper (center lead) of the RF gain control. Also, check Q17 and L5.
If I run my finger across C184 and C182, the receive volume jumps up, gets fuzzy and then drops back down until I run my finger across them again. C182 I've replaced, gonna replace C184 and try that. I may even yank out the 7222ap IC and put in another one. Not sure if it's that 7222ap or not...
Yanked out and tested the following (replaced all 4 anyway):
C243 (tested fine with good ESR).
C182 (tested as right UF but had high ESR, over 70 ohms).
C179 (tested fine with good ESR).
C175 (tested fine with a slightly high ESR).
Q44 (tested as a BJT but had over 300 HFE. Replaced anyway...
I honestly believe now that the receive is there, just the volume is low, as though the volume control isn't working. I checked it and it tests as a 1k ohm, which it should be.
Getting the right signals on all my locals, and skip, just the volume has to be jacked almost wide open to hear anyone.
